Their brains aren't yet fully developed to really have a mature reasoning as yours or mine.. or anyone who's older. While I agree this child should be disciplined for his actions... getting his arm crushed causing it to need amputation is a bit extreme for something like a loaf of bread... especially at his age. I'm sure lashing him across the back would be just as effective... its painful.. leaves scars but atleast his life won't be thrown away because he lost an arm for a stealing a loaf of bread at the age of 8. Get your mind straight owequitit.
    1) I never said I agreed with it. In fact, had you bothered to actually read my entire response, you would have CLEARLY seen my alternative, but equally effective solution.

    2) You assume that I don't understand basic psychology. That would be a mistake on your part.

I KNOW for a fact that the average 8 year old is more than capable of understanding what is right, and what is wrong, if so taught by their upbringing, which really brings me to the point I have been dancing around. Our society has a belief that kids can't and shouldn't be held responsible for their actions because they "aren't fully developed," "don't comprehend," "can't handle it emotionally." Stop making excuses and we would see what we seem to have forgotten since the likes of Dr. Spock roamed the earth. While children are not fully developed, they are indeed capable of rational thought, and in fact understand such things if we bother to teach them, rather than make excuses for not teaching them.

I can assure you that I knew why I shouldn't steal when I was younger, and it was because of the alternative method proposed in my original post, as well as moderated teaching that didn't treat me like I was a child incapable of understanding such things.

    3) FYI, not only do I have some official psychological background, but I am by trade a practical psychologist for people who may not "fully developed."

    4) My father is a psychologist and as such, we have extensive conversations about such things.

Don't assume that because I present an alternative viewpoint to the current trends that I am ignorant, uninformed or wrong.

      imho.
This is in denial of history.

It is a very clearly outlined system.

It is not different than when you enter into a contractual agreement. The terms, conditions, and penalties are all very clearly outlined and stipulated PRIOR to the contract.

It isn't like they just one day said "oh we don't like you, and we are going to smash your arm."

The entire society knows the conditions. They know the penalties, and they should be passing this on to their children. Everything is clearly outlined ahead of time, and people are appalled when they actually follow through with the predetermined system.

As for people who disagree with it, it could very well be argued that there are people that think there should be no punishment at all. Does that automatically make their system better?

^^ you have to admit though... if it were real don't you think they would hold/tie the hand or the boy down.

and scott... again I just can't agree with you. If this is real it clearly didn't take place in America...who knows when this kid has his last meal. An 8 year old who hasn't eaten in a few days or sees his parents struggling to put food on the table might not be able to judge right and wrong as easily as a privileged american. Should he be punished, of course. Should he be permanetely disfigured. NO.

            ^^ x2

But damn Scott, it seems like you'd beat down anyone else's opinion to an extreme.

A few lashes on the back would definitely deter that poor kid from stealing again, but like someone else said crushing an arm kinda defeats the purpose of discipline and pushes it towards more of a human violent side.

You do that shit here and your in jail for quite awhile, you do that there they look on it as just part of daily life.

After all they do have honor killings..and it's been on the media's radar at least twice.

We see things they do to be really harsh, and I'm sure they have the same opinions about us.

x2. The kid doesn't look like he is in fear or even worried about the possible outcome. He appears to be pretty calm. Either that is one ballsy little 8 year old or this is staged. Most American 8 year olds would be crying for mommy and daddy to come save them.

But I agree with Rusty's last points, IF this is true, he should be punished but should not be permanently disfigured.

And lets not forget he has another arm. How do they know he is left handed? What to stop him from just stealing with his right arm next time? This could be a deterrent but you cant deter hungry, especially an 8 year old.

              Damn kids.

What did they do before they had a truck to run the kid over with?

Sometimes I REALLY wish people would read.

Having eaten or not, he still made a rational decision based on a known set of consequences, and chose to act accordingly.

I NEVER said I agree with their system. What I said was that it IS an effective form of punishment.

Killing people is an effective way of making people shut up, that DOES NOT mean that I would kill them.

Sometimes people need to remove tight underwear from crevices and stop reading more into it than what is there.

No what really happens is that I present an opposing viewpoint from a completely neutral perspective, and people who can't read, comprehend, or rationalize on their own assume that I want to condone baby killing.

Please read my FIRST response, in its entirety once again. Repeat until comprehension occurs.

                    Thank you.

P.S. I haven't beat down anyones opinion on anything. I have disagreed, on some aspects, but not said a word as to what I believe. Who is the one that is currently 6 on 1? Whose viewpoint is really being beat down?

Also, personally, I deal with this personal responsibility crap all day long. You give people a VERY clearly defined set of standards. You show them where to get them. You show them how to use them. You explain them in great detail. And then you explain the penalties for not following them. Inevitably, when they screw up, and you hold them to the standards agreed upon, they get pissed off and somehow want to blame everyone else, and rationalize their way out of it with some lame ass excuse as to why the couldn't or shouldn't have to do it. I won't protect it, and I won't allow them to do things they know they shouldn't. So you know what? I do the least pleasureable thing. I bust their balls. Guess what? Next time around, they are following the expected and agreed upon code of conduct that was originally outlined, and they are PROACTIVE about doing so. Up to this point, they didn't because they knew they didn't have to. People are smart enough to learn by example. People are smart enough to learn by observation. People are smart enough to know what they can get away with, and what they can't. People learn 90% from things other than being told what to do. That includes, but is not limited to, observation, interaction, and last but not least, example.

I don't agree with the exact actions that occurred, but what I DO agree with, and what I won't change my mind on, is our society's failure to hold people accountable for their actions. Especially when there is a set behavior expectency that is clearly defined, outlined, available and understandable. I will not tolerate, support, condone, rationalize, make excuses for, or accept a system that makes decisions based on the inaccurate assessment that people shouldn't be responsible, aren't capable of rational thought and shouldn't have their feelings hurt. Sometimes egos and ass cheeks need to be bruised. It doesn't usually take a whole lot before such actions are no longer required.

I am realistic in that I understand that a small % of people are sociopathic and just will not fit into the norm. But that excuse does NOT apply to the normative population.

Every where you go. "He doesn't understand." "She has ADD." "He was spanked once as a child." "He has blue eyes." "He didn't have any friends." "Susie got a hangnail and that is why she killed." "He is 15 and throwing a tantrum because he doesn't know how to cope with his feelings." etc etc etc. I won't rationalize this crap no matter what.

I deal with it constantly on a professional level, I am currently dealing with it on a personal level, and I have dealt with it in the past among criminals. The more we make excuses for bad behavior, the worse it is going to get. It goes right back to expecting behavior A by rewarding behavior B. It isn't going to happen. Anyone with REAL psychological background would know exactly what I am talking about.

Just because the average American (ESPECIALLY in OUR fucked up stupid generation) is afraid to hurt anybodies feelings or thinks the world revolves around them doesn't mean I have to.

Now, since none of you apparently read anyway, I am going to say this so that it is here. I DO NOT condone what happened. What I DO condone is holding small children responsible for such actions. I was, and I understood perfectly what I did, why it was wrong, and after being forced to return it and appologize, I understood why I didn't want to do it again (embarrassment). I was less than half his age. However, if at that age, my parents had just passed it off as "he doesn't know better" and allowed me to keep the item, there would have been more. I guarantee it. How are we supposed to "know better" if we don't "learn better?"

Assuming this is real, I'm pretty sure the kid wouldn't want to freakin move. He is getting his arm ran over for stealing, now failure to comply? Pretty sure the kid isn't tryin to get killed right then and there.

If it were real they would HAVE to restrain the boy. And if they didn't, that is another indicator that he understood what he did, although I really don't see that happening.

I don't care if it's their way of life. Some murderers believe they are doing nothing wrong. Some rapists believe that the women were asking for it because they have cleavage, or wear an open back shirt or some shit.
Just like all Catholic priests rape little boys, right? The responses in this thread are why the world is fucked, not the stuff in the op.
