    commputer RAM issue

well i just bought a biostar board for my old 475 intel and this is a really great up grade with the PCI-e 16 and DDR2 ram but there lays my problem i got 4 gigs for PNY (2x2 gig sticks) in running winXP 32 bit and windows is only seeing 2.37 gigs. i took back both sticks and got fresh ones and the same thing. i took my mobo back and got a fresh one still the same thing

im lost i dont know why its doing this

    heres my board:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138079

probably need to enable pae if your setup supports it. xp's memory addressing only allows it to see about 3.5gb of memory max usually...http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...AE/PAEdrv.mspx

Yeah, XP 32 bit really doesn't want to see more than 3 gigs total. Best bet is to either switch to a 64 bit OS or just install less ram. 2 gigs is plenty for XP.

On my computer, with a 32 bit operating system, I can only run 4 gigs of ram. With a 64 bit operating system, I can run 8 gigs. Maybe upgrade your os to a 64 bit?

Your onboard video card is using it.

would disabling the on board video solve this?

Because you're running 1x 4GB Ram stick instead of 2x 2GB Ram stick. Thus you are running in single channel mode, thus limiting how actual memory your mobo can interact with at one time. Yes the mobo says it can handle up to 4 GB, but that's assuming you're running in dual channel mode, which is MUCH faster anyway. In computers 2 smaller sticks performs better than 1 big stick.

The other limitation is 32 bit OS. ANY 32 bit OS will run into this problem as the programming limit of the OS is 3.5 GB of RAM. This cannot be changed anywhere, its a limit your OS simply cannot overcome unless you change to 64 bit. 64 Bit can interact with something ridiculous like 12 Terabytes.

I ran 4x1GB for years in Dual Channel...as long as he has a stick of ram in both slots for that channel, it will run dual channel, whether you have 2x1GB, 2x2GB, 4x1GB, whatever.

As for the OP, you should be able to lower the amount of memory used by the onboard video in your BIOS.

EDIT: D'oh. Thought you typed 4x1GB, not 1x4GB. My bad! However, he says he is running 2x2GB.

Yeah... CPUZ will show your total ram. But windows 32 is limited to around 3.5 gb as others have said...

Look in the manual for the motherboard you got to see if you can change how much ram is being allocated to the video card.

If you want to use that ram to its potental though, get 64 bit

but before going to 64 bit, you need to make sure 64 bit drivers are available for any devices you have, as 32 bit drivers are not compatible with 64 bit instructions.

What is the product number of the mobo you bought?
