When the block blows apart like that, parts leave the engine... very hot parts. Very fast moving parts. That engine isn't all that far away from you, and the firewall, hood, and windshield are much weaker than the block that those bits just broke out of... I wouldn't want to be in a car with a grenade like that under the hood!

Firewalls are one of the strongest parts of the car. I wouldn't worry about anything going though it.
