Plasma, LCD, Front, or Rear Projection?...

Me and my girlfriend will be in the market soon for a new T.V. and are wondering what's the better deal. I hear Plasma has burn issues whereas LCD you have to replace a bulb every so often at $200 a pop. Rear Projection poses the blurry aspect if viewed from an angle (plus I hear you can't play video games on them either) and I have no knowledge of Front Projection. If anyone knows their technology then let me know. Also, you may list what you have and what problems, if any, you've had with it. Thanks...

Well I have a rear projection HD set and I'm pretty happy with it. I couldn't afford Plasma or LCD. I really wanted a DLP, but it was out of my budget.

You can play video games on rear projection tvs. You just have to be careful you don't play GTA or whatever for 16hours straight because you might have a burn in problem then. If you do end up going with rear projection the first thing you do is turn down the contrast. The factory sets it to torch mode which means all the way up. That will shorten the life of the CRTs dramatically.

The only bad thing I hear about plasma and LCD is that they don't have good black levels. So in shadowy scenes the black will look grey.

If you have any other questions about rear projection I'll be happy to answer them.

instead of getting a new TV, my dad got a high-definition InFocus projector, mounted it to the ceiling in one corner of the living room, and mounted a pull-down screen in the other corner. with the lights off, i admit it looks great... but with most projectors, when theres ambient light, it washes it out a bit. not bad, but it happens. also like accordme said, it also has some problems with black being BLACK, its more greyish... also its good that theres no problem of burning. only problem is that after hundreds of hours, the bulb may blow. price for a new bulb depends on which projector u get (you should def research them if ur consdiering it) but i think my dads are like 150. not TOO bad, considering the tons of money u save by not getting an expensive tv...

with it running, the image is 79" diagonal, and thats pretty damn huge, and the whole setup was definately cheaper than any TV would be, even if it was alot smaller than 79.

Anything that isn't a tube is gonna have bulb issues; LCD, DLP, LCoS. Personally I wouldn't get a plasma. If you must have something that hangs on the wall then I suppose you're pretty limited. If not, my choices would likely be DLP or LCoS.

I wouldn't say you can play games on a rear-projector. Its not really any less prone to burn-in then any other type of TV. Also, be aware that if you get a widescreen watching regular TV will give you black bars on the sides and those will burn in.

I suggust a rear projection HDTV. Most of the "burn" issues are only in older projection tv's. Even if you leave a stagnent picture on the tv, you're not going to burn anything. Plasma and LCD's suck. They tend to be very blocky when watching regular tv. The color is awesome, but everything is blocky and not crisp. Front projection, what has been said before, they suck unless all the lights in the house are out.

rear projection, widescreen hdtv is my vote...

A lot of people ask this question at the HomeTheater SPot board I frequent. All the experts say the same thing. It ok only in moderation. And you're right, pretty much all TVs are prone to this.

But like I already said, TURN THE CONTRAST DOWN!!! It will help a lot again burn in and lengthen the life of the CRTs.

As far as the black bars goes, pretty much every widescreen TV has stretch modes. In fact the newer TVs have great stretch modes that make the picture look like it isn't even stretched.

Oh man thanks you guys for all the replies! The Girlfriend works at Best Buy and gets a MAD discount on high end televisions. So far LCD seems to tug at me a little more then the rest but I love the idea of having up to a 70+ inch screen (via front projection). I don't plan on playing games [i]too[/b] much, so I won't rule out that factor. As long as rear projection doesn't pose too many problems then I may just go with that too since they aren't as pricey as Plasma/LCD. But again guys thanks a lot!...

If you gf has the bb discount definitely get the service plan. Having the set calibrated every year will easily offset the cost of the plan. I'm sure she gets that dirt cheap as well.
