2nd year's gonna be the hardest... after that it's a breeze. Make sure to make friends with non engineers if you plan on getting laid. Good luck, it's a great major. I'm glad I did it.

Did one year of it. Then dropped out, had nothing to do with school though. I had a 3.8GA when I left.

mechanical engineering has nothing to do with mechanics

I am a mechanical engineering designer, but not an engineer.

Second year mechanical engineer here, @ UCSD.
Classes get harder for us in the third year.

As for advice, be arrogant about your knowledge. Obviously don't be outwardly arrogant, but keep the mindset that you can an A in every class. Feel motivated to do well for the joy of fulfilling your arrogance. It feels awesome to walk into a midterm thinking you're going to own it, and then walking out an hour later knowing you just owned it.

Also, this is cliche, but stay on top of it. Don't ever learn something just to be able to pass the midterm or final. Class material will pretty much always come back to bite you, especially if it seems hard. It's better to learn something well, i.e. the theory behind flux, and do poorly on the midterm, than to learn a shortcut to a flux problem and just get past the midterm.

Oh and try to hang out with people in your major who are doing as well as, or better than, you.

bad ass response man. I appreciate that. I am about to head into my second semester... doing 12 credits during the summer. So far i absolutely love my major and am very happy im doing/studying what i have always dreamed of doing. I must say i am glad that i was a well educated mechanic before going into this because i have a very good grasp on all of the concepts as well as machine shop experience so i am also killing it in my machine design/ tooling classes. sucks it will take so long but i have a contact lined up for an internship at lockheed martin.

f'sho man, hands on experience owns. You don't realize how big of an advantage you get from working on cars until you realize that no one else knows how to operate a screwdriver.

                              Graduate Mechanical Engineer here!

make sure you get to grips with the fundamentals:

                              -statics
                              -dynamics
                              -thermodynamics
                              -strength (mechanics of materials)
                              -fluid mechanics

and also the various engineering mathematics subjects, and you'll get thru fine.
