I drive a 2001 eclipse GS daily. It is a VERY nice car and runs out good. They have stiff suspension but all in all I like it. Oh and its the wifes car lol. Be careful with those4 and the 1st gens because they had a lot of problems.

                  I LOVE that body style.

                  BUT

mitsu isn't as reliable, they are even worse than nissan's of the same year. You will end up with more repairs. Doesn't that have the 4G63? That engine has the crank walk issue, 7-bolt main's did. I don't know much more than that though.

I beat those eclipses with intake mods and exhaust mods on the highway all the time when my f22a1 was all stock...so they aren't quick either.

Make sure it's in good shape but if it is I guess get it.

You know less than you thought... The RS didn't get the 4G63. It got the 420A... which is the same thing you're going to find in a Neon.

The good thing about the RS is that it probably wasn't beat to hell. If it's not riced out, and there are no visible signs of neglect, it was probably not beat on. It's VERY difficult to find the sportier models that haven't been put through hell.

well good news for the op then and I think those trouble engines were earlier model gs's anyway...like limited year models...obviously I'm not an eclipse expert

The trouble 4G63s were in the 2nd gen, as you said. They were in the GS-T and GSX models only. The GS had the 420A just like the RS in the 2nd generation.

Even in the 4G63 models, crankwalk wasn't nearly as problematic as it was made out to be. It's not all that common. Additionally, if a car makes it over 100,000 miles, the chances that it's going to suffer from crankwalk are very slim. Most 4G63 equipped 2nd gen models you'll find now will have either had a rebuilt motor, or they have passed 100k safely. Crankwalk is NOT really a concern anymore. Now, the major concern is simply normal wear and tear, or, more commonly, abuse.

And I wouldn't say "lucky for the OP" when he's getting a Neon engine. The 4G63 (or 4G64 variant) was a far better motor. I'd take the motor in an early Hyundai Sonata or Elantra over a Neon motor.

if hes just looking to DD the car, i think he'll be fine with the neon motor.

and dsm's are just like every other car, theyre reliable as long as yo take care of them. but we all know as soon as you start modding a car problems do tend to arise.

Oh yeah, the Neon motor is fine... there are plenty still alive today.

But it's silly to say that it's a lucky thing that he's getting what is, essentially, an inferior motor. The 4G63 and its variants are some very fine motors.
