computer peeps check in (need a new video card)

ok i got a old gateway desktop gt5082

    link to specs
    http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Gateway-...082-Desktop-PC

has athlon x2 proccesor 2gb ram (4gb max) and 250gb hard drive and 500gb external making 750gb total. a nice little computer, with memory card reader, dvd burner, no blutooth built in, although it would be cool.

my question is that i wanna hook it up to my hdtv via hdmi output. i looked at bestbuy and they want around $500-$700 for a tower (no monitor) with hdmi output. so i wanna know if i can just buy a new video card with hdmi output and use that on my 32" 1080P resolution hdtv and also have a vga monitor hooked up for when i wanna use a smalller 17" monitor.

is that possible? and if it is what is a good sub $100 video card..

i found this one for $80 from best buy
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+G...&skuId=9652962

looks legit and according to the comments looks like it does output in 1080p, because i don't want one that only does 720p you know

    so what do ya'll recommend?

sell my setup and get a whole newer system from best buy or build my old one, does it have the potential to still run up to date and fast for a few more years

and if i upgrade my memory which memory do i have to buy, i see on the best buy website theres quite a few different ones. i know it's ddr2 i think.

i already paid for the 1080p version i'm trying to get the best picture possible since i watch alot of movies you know

From what I've researched, there's not a huge difference between 720 and 1080. You should be able to find a good video card with HDMI output for under $100. Is the Geforce 6100 integrated or a separate card? This one should be plenty for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133306

You could go cheaper, but you ought to go with the newer series video cards. Upgrading the RAM would definitely be a good idea as well.

most movies are in 720p just to let you know. Blu-Ray is probably the only Format that uses 1080i. Unless you are using actually disc's its kinda pointless using HDMI. I am content with the resolution off of a VGA cable, it serves the same purpose IMO. i say keep your computer and just upgrade your video card with one that has HDMI or VGA! That or buy a video card that supports dual monitors and you will be set. Does your HDTV have VGA?

When it comes to playback of HD files, the video card is the least important thing. You had better make sure your CPU can process the files without any lag.

I would build a new tower, if you can afford it. But that's just me. Your computer is outdated , I'm sure. No use spending money on a computer that's on it's way out the door.

I built a computer for my inlaws. I got the cheapest dual out card I could find, and it runs HD video fine. But it's cause it had a x2 kuma chip.

my hdtv does not have a vga..only hdmi imputs...it's a lower end hdtv but looks great. and yeah your right. most of my movies are in AVI format, but i do have a few Bluray Rips but they would still look good on 720p i assume.
i'm gonna look around at a few used computer repair shops to see if they have any used ram or a used hdmi video card, til i can afford to completely build me a new computer..or get a new one lol..

and idk if dual monitors would be a good idea if i'm using a hdtv and a cheaper vga lcd monitor. i'd just use the hdtv to surf stuff on and a vga just for when i need to do something and don't feel like looking at a bigg screen.

isn't the motherboard in mind dual too?

and the computer runs great. it's running windows 7 64bit, and i think i'm gonna upgrade to 4gb ram but i'm still not 100% sure what i'm gonna do. just getting some ideas before i decide.

i also have this other desktop tower i got from my friend that he stripped to use parts for another better computer he had

it's a gt5228..looks the same as the other one posted, but better i think
heres the specs for that one. and i could build that one too. but that one is missing the following

changes are, 2.2ghz, sata instead of ide hard drive, and uses ddr2 sd ram instead of ddr ram.
                http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Gateway-...228-Desktop-PC

-dvd drive (doesn't realllly need one since i got a burner on my laptop)
-hard drive (but dif ide vs. sata, won't work)
-proccesor chip thing under heatsick (gone =[ prob too much money to replace, and not sure if i can swap the one from the other computer)
-ddr2 ram (ddr vs. ddr2, probably won't work, but i'm gonna upgrade the other one anyways)

well since you have 64 bit why not use it to its full capability? its can handle MOAR that 4 gigs. but its also what your MB can handle. I say Dump that AMD machine, personally i think AMD is trash when used for multimedia. Upgrade to a intel core 2 duo or core 2 quad 6-8 gigs RAM 2TB internal Solid state drive and a Compatible MB and your set.

What you COULD do is also run a machine with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and you wont have to worry about any Virus issues at all.It is possible to run That machine with Mac OS X, it just takes time to figure out how to install it correctly. Then you will be happy with the results. A overall smoother running machine, with all the goodies, built for multi media and MOAR.

i look at these possible computers i would buy if i got a new system.
                    1. acer nettop (because it's hella small and hdmi output, but no built in wifi or cd drive, but cheap $$)

If all you want is to watch HD video and your computer can handle it now on your monitor, then just buy a video card, if there's a slot for it on your current mobo. Does It have an agp or pci-e slot?

If your computer can play the video now, you don't need more ram or an upgraded anything. Just a card that will allow for dual out. You can always get an adapter if the card doesn't have an actual hdmi out. My card has a dual dvi and then a third out that looks similar to a s-video. From that I have an adapter that splits it into component cables, capable of 1920x1080 resolution.

It's got one PCI-E x16 slot. Something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127463) should be quite sufficient, but I recommend going to Tom's Hardware and see what (if any) additional features you might want (do you game?).

4GB of RAM is never going to hurt, 2 is a bit low these days. Make sure that that dual core 2GHz is sufficient to play what you want, it may be a little low on clock speed to do the trick. If you are happy with your computer short of HDMI output, just get a video card and save the rest of your money for the CB7.

i mean i'll play counter strike every once in a while but mostly never, and my 2gb ram handled it great. but i'm mostly addicted to my ps3 (codmw2)

so only gonna be surfing the web and playing videos/movies from this one.

i went to a local pc store and they wanted $150 for a video card with hdmi...
and about $40 per 1gb ddr ram needing 4 making a total of $160

i don't know if i'm gonna upgrade ram quite yet. might wait and pick up a few 1gb sticks slowly on craigslist or something lol..

Hey buddy.. guess what one of my system is pretty much the same as you have lol

You dont have to spend money on a whole new setup if what you are using it for watching video on your tv. Here is a simple solution for you, buy this:

                            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127469

your pc supports x16 pci-e. and you dont have to pay an arm an leg to a shop to do this for you. its a simple plug and play.. and then install the drives, thats it!
