        according to msnbc
the star that gives it heat and light is only 20 light years away

one light year is about 6 trillion miles(10 trillion km)

but the yahoo link says 120 trillion miles as opposed to 80 trillion

        which one is more creditable

That's pretty crazy. 120 years going the speed of light. You'd need 2 or 3 generations just to get there.

If you are traveling at the speed of light, to the outside world it would take 120 years.
To the people in the ship, it would actually seem like less time.

(There is a formula to figure out how long it would seem to take for the travelers; but while I "get" relativity, I'm not that effin smart.)

So, we could actually get there in 1 generation. If we started them as infants in a space ship. The might have aged 50-80 years by the time they get there.
              Project wagon! Much excite! 2018!

This is why we need to perfect the art of cryonics. We need to just freeze a crap load of people and then ship then off, then wake their asses up when they get close.

so they are saying all this stuff just because of the distance it is from their "sun"?

i mean this is cool and all, but they seem to have a made a lot of generalizations only from that one fact..

many stars have a "golden zone" where the conditions are similar to our own planet. just a few ten-thousand miles each way will make a HUGE difference in the climate on the planet. also, they are not explaining everything the researchers did to come to these conclusions, msnbc is not a research journal in which to publish papers. it is just a way of getting the news out there, there is much more information to be had by looking into it further.

the yahoo article actually seems more informative to me..

and yeah, i understand, but being that far away lets me think that they are just throwin possibilities out there.. im not saying its not possible, because im sure it is, but i just think they are getting a little ahead of themselves..
