found a gun i thought about buying...

thought about getting these today. saw them and fell in love. lol. but im still iffy about buying a gun tho.

both are .40s. one with a laser sight.

im all for home defense. but then you have to take 2 things in mind. am i ready to fire at someone? a LIVE person with something that can KILL? and what about the kids in the house? will they be safe?

i WOULD get a shotgun but thats too big for a small house like mine. i need something i can pull out quick and stop someone quick.

      Shadow,

.40 cartridges are expensive. If you are looking for a recreational gun, go with a 9mm, rounds are a lot less costly. If you want something for stopping power, just go big and get a .45. There are sales all the time on these rounds and they end up bein' cheaper than my .40 rounds.

The only reason i know this is I messed up and got me a .40 at first not knowing about the ammo.

What did you fall in love with? Is that the first gun you've seen? Did you fall in love with the price?

Hi Points (which that is) are great guns... if you're in fear for your life, NEED a gun, but don't have any money.

They are the absolute bottom of the barrel and I wouldn't trust my life or the life of a loved one on a Hi Point.

For $500ish you can buy a FAR better pistol.

        BUT BEFORE THAT!

Have you actually thought about owning a gun? The storys you tell me about your kids make me shudder at the thought.

very true. But the red tag price $250, $200 is considerably less than $500 for a glock or something, so hoping he'll never need to use it maybe it's a good buy.

and ive always liked guns. my favorite being an AR-15 and Mp5. just never really wanted own one due to the kids in the house and cost. and ive realized, that the kids dont go in our bedroom. ive watched them for the past 5-6 months. as long as they know i dont have it, they wont go looking for it. one thing i over looked.

they havent touched the last 2 airsoft guns i have left and i have them in plan sight. i have recently found out that a lot of drug dealers and criminals are getting out of jail and i wish to be a little more....protected. from my recent airsoft battle, even with a BB traveling at 400+fps wont stop a man whos been shot before. a bullet to the arm, leg and shoulder would tho....

Sure, it's a great buy. As is the ebay turbo system for your car. Who cares if the turbo is by turbonitix and says made in china. It's probably a good buy.

The only market a Hi point fills is someone who NEEDS a gun to save their life ASAP. For example, a poor battered ex wife's husband has found her house. She should go buy any gun that she can afford. At the bottom of the barrel is the hi point. Not good, not nice, very ugly but it'll do the job (probably).

If you don't NEED a gun, save up and buy one that's 100's of times better.

Also, generally, 9mm is cheaper than .40 is cheaper than .45. Cost is only one thing to consider when you're choosing a caliber.

exactly. ive lived in this neighborhood for the past 3-4yrs. i havent needed to use it, being that all the shootings here have been between people they know and were getting back for some deal gone wrong. but like ive heard before, id rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

In all seriousness. Don't buy a gun yet. You have a lot of learning to do before you should buy one.

That's normal. Nobody was born knowing everything about guns. It's something that should be taken VERY seriously.

Now is the time to ask questions and listen. If you want some actual advice, hit up my site and ask questions. You can keep asking here too, obveously. This isn't a gun site though so you can't really rely on some of the advice.

                  No, a 9mm will NOT fit in a .40.

i guess in his situation reliability would be key, having it work the time it needs to work would be important.

If you see the blue and yellow stickers on the grips in the pic, those are the caliber...(diameter of bullet). So no a 9mm will not fit in a .40 will not fit a .45.

well im not looking for something to go to war with. lol. something i know i can fire one or two rounds and put down the guy at the other end of the muzzle. i just talked to the woman at the pawn shop and she told me the same thing. lol. you were right. she said a Hi Point is something good for just home defense but for something you plan to do target practice or regular shooting putting more than 400 rounds thru, she wouldnt recommend it.

$300 is my limit. i dont hate guns, i just hate how loud they are. if i want to take you down, i want to be able to do it without letting everyone around me know that i did. lol. sadly silencers are illegal.

It's good that you want a gun, there's nothing wrong with that. You really need to have the right mindset though. A gun is something that can kill someone or a loved one if they're not careful. That is what I'd want to talk to you about.

I could look around for some training for you if you want. I'd really suggest staying away from the Hi Point and looking for another budget gun. A shot gun WILL be your best bet.

If someone were to break in, would you go looking for them? I sure hope not because even well trained officers will tell you that clearing a house is a pain in the ass. They'll also tell you that they always wait for backup before they do. Clearing a house on your own with a gun that you never shoot is suicide.

What you'd want to do is get the kids, wife, etc into the same room with you. Point the gun at the door. Call the police and wait for them to clear your house for you.

Edit: Suppressors are not illegal in every state.

thats one thing my manager pointed out to me. i showed it to him because he's a bit of a gun head himself. but he said "you have to keep in mind. your pointing an object that can KILL at someone. are you willing to fully comprehend that concept?"

one thing i have set in my mind: your a thief. you break into my house, your coming for something that isnt yours. either it be a life or a possession i paid for. neither of which i plan to let you walk out with. if your willing to risk your life and/or freedom, then im willing to risk it for you.

i dont want to kill the guy. only incapacitate him/her til the cops arrive to remove them.
