EDIT: GM considers the HHR an A-body vehicle, whic is basically a cobalt, so. As far as the maker calling it a truck, no. It's manufactured as a passenger vehicle. The truck thing must either be a state thing or DMV thing.

even the stripped down panel version still isn't a truck...not even close to a truck by any standards but that's Philly for you. I just can't understand that a vehicle that supposedly replaced that fake hotrod knockoff misfit to be considered a truck.

I just thought HHR's were called HHR's because "Homosexual Hot Rod" was too long to fit across the hatch, let alone be called a truck.

I'm guessing that truck spaces are larger?

The government has MPG laws for non-commercial vehicles that the OEM's have to "average" or they are fined. the truck rating they have to hit is lower than the car rating but still higher than most traditional trucks hit. because of this, the manufacturers will make a higher-efficiency vehicle that they plan to sell a lot of fit into the truck category by making it able to tow a certain amount or whatever they have to do to make it fit in. this is why things like the HHR are technically considered "trucks" by the government. Im not positive this is why they give them different license plates, but it is my best idea as to why.

I had a thought, maybe when the owner of the HHR registered it, they applied for truck plates, I know here you have to check off what type of plate your are registering for, I could probably put truck plates on my cb and never be questioned.

Interesting, but wouldn't vans and crossovers be considered trucks as well? I'm sure they can tow as much as an HHR.

Hmmm...makes me think of frame design as the main reason...

Trucks have a bed. HHRs do not. And an air mattress in a cargo HHR doesn't count as a bed.
