I hate it when people call their vehicles.......

    WHIPS!

I don't even understand the reasoning for calling a vehicle that.

Anyone care to explain and shed some light onto the term?

    "WIP" = work in progress

"WHIP" = nothing to do with an automobile

    1999 BMW M3
    2001 Honda CR-V SE RT4WD
    2005 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71
    2015 Suzuki V-Strom 650

I guess when they accelerate forward, their head "whips" backward.

I see, so basically somebody abbreviated "Work In Progress" into the acronym "WIP" and from there was mistaken to be spelled "whip" due to pronunciation of the acronym.

Whip then isn't the correct term and so when people use it they don't even know the meaning behind the word or acronym really.

the word whip derives from the age when you had a horse & carriage in which you used the whip increase acceleration of the "vehicle".

Well, thats my assumption of it

edit: Just found this on the web -

          From Urbandictionary.com

          Whip:

When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the "whip". The whip is what you used to control the horses on a stagecoach, hence the analogy. Many years later, various hip hop artists noticed that the Mercedes-Benz logo resembled a steering wheel. They then proceeded to use the old term "whip" to describe any Mercedes-Benz vehicle. The term has now been generalized to classify any expensive automobile.

The Mercedes logo is actually the tip of a "Silver Arrow" head on like its gonna getcha in the eye. The BMW logo is an airplane propeller in motion. Just a tidbit. Damn i play too many video games. Interesting about the whip.

That definition may not be accurate... urbandictionary is full of crap most of the time.

Whip is the term used. WIP can mean "work in progress"... but people do not ever mean that when they refer to "my whip".

Most likely, it's as meaningless a term as saying "my jawn", "my shit", "my piece", etc...

Actually, the BMW propeller is a myth. It's not a propeller. I'm not going to tell you what it really is, I'll let you do the research.
