a program runs on the systems that let's Sony know what's on it and whenever you login it downloads, and theirs away to not have to update That's what my friend kept doing and still be able to get online, they look at ip addresses i guess

Jailbraking ps3
I don't know what jailbrake he used, but it must not have been the full bootloader from failoverflow.
The typical ones work by installing custom firmware onto your system, this can be patched and make you not be able to play online.
The real jailbrake for the ps3 came from failoverflow being able to actually install their own bootloader on the system.
This is much different than firmware, the bootloader operates before the ps3 even knows you are running the playstation OS.
The jailbrake does not explicitly allow you to copy games to a harddrive, but it does allow you to install custom firmware that is from what I understand completely undetectable by sony.
This allows users to run linux with what will hopefully be full control of the power pc architecture and access to system memory.
If you want to steal games with it, that is your decision, and one I don't support, however homebrew and other OS installs are A ok in my book
My ps3 is still pre 3.4 solely to retain my other OS features. I have planned on installing the cutom bootloader for a while, but am waiting for the heat to die down on the ps3 being hacked and for all the bugs to get worked out before proceeding.
Just out of curiosity, was he just running custom firmware?

lol sony isn't going to spend time suing someone who modded their console. They will ban the console and thats that. The people who help distribute the mods are the ones who get it in the assOriginally posted by almostJDM View PostIf anyone has jailbroken your PS3......... Thank God I only play 2-3 games, and use Netflix. Thus, JB'ing never interested me, on my PS3 or prior on my 360.
$50-60 for 2-3 games, doesn't bother me one bit
