    Computer help needed.

    I need help. I have a hp laptop here running xp sp2, and it says media disconnected. It shows no IP address and YES the button is on. Wireless and network doesnt work.

    I tried the following with no luck:

    System restore to a date weeks ago
    winsock fix
    getting the winsock &winsock2 files from another computer and loaded it
    turned on and made sure wireless zero configuration was enabled
    ipconfig /release /renew
    Updating the wireless driver to the newest
    I tried to do a manual set to IP and DNS...didnt work.
    DNS is obtained automatically
    and did something similar to this in the CMD "Netsh ip int reset resetlog" <---may not be exactly what I typed but it said it was done and told me to reset.


    It will connect to a wireless network but then say it cant validate. THen it shows no packets sent or recieved. Same thing for a cat5 plug in. I have other computers on my network and they work just fine.

    Im going crazy and im getting pissed. Can anyone shead some light?

    You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

    That's the cevat of windows. Sometimes a problem is fixed the fastest by a fresh reinstall. My mother in laws computer is running W7 and had the same problem. Her wireless dongle wouldn't connect to the router. I did everything and more to diagnose why and fix it. The easiest thing to do was simply wipe the computer and reinstall W7. I've been using linux for years now, so I never run into these issues any more

      you should "netsh winsock reset catalog" first in the CMD prompt and then "netsh int ip reset reset.log" in the prompt. afterwards reboot.

        your network is likely a WPA/wpa2 encryption type which isn't handled until sp3. Use ethernet to upgrade to sp3. or this should work:

          but he said that even using an cat5 cable it does the same thing.

            If it was only wifi I can see that. But even my cat5 is not working.

                just installed a wifi through usb.....STILL DOESNT WORK WTF!
