    Woot i think i got a job!

As a delivery driver for Smyth Automotive in northern Kentucky. I'll be an independent driver where i have to drive my own vehicle but that'll be ok. I don't get health benefits but being single so it shouldn't be that expensive. I get a flat $530 a week with a fuel allowance so in actuality, i'll probably bring home like $400 a week after fuel expenses, oh well that's way more than i made working my last job two years ago as a receiving clerk.

I'll be using my Civic for a while until i get my money situation under control and then i'll get back to working on my Accord since it'd be better on fuel.

I figured i'd do this job for a couple of years until i'm done with school because it's all during the day and i can continue with lessons at night.

I wonder if i get a discount on autoparts? I mean that will be cool as hell not having to pay full retail for things.

Congrats mang good luck on that and congratulations. Im sure youll probably get a discount providing that you talk to the right people and such it shouldnt be a problem and all. Lets see all you have to do is know your way around well and if not get a gps you know and you should be straight.

      Thanks man!

The guy that interviewed me said that it's really laid back and i'd be working about 40 hours a week and sometimes 42 hours, no biggie. I won't have anyone above me but so long as i don't take an hour to make a 20 minute delivery i'd be ok. My older brother is going to give me his old Nuvee GPS but most of the deliveries will be around the area of the store so once i learn the area it won't be so bad. I just need to schedule a drug test somewhere and all will be good.

Man i've been out of work for so long that this is going to be one sweet as gig.

I know a job is a job but having you as a 1099'd employee they are completely screwing you since they set your hours, they set where you go, they pay for your fuel, they are drug testing you, etc...

i think it'll be ok. I'll be on the road driving around to mechanic shops dropping off small boxed parts that's all.

I've got to do a drug test tomorrow morning and then i'll go to the store to train for a bit with the dispatcher. I'm home every night and the money is decent plus i'll be off on weekends for the football games.

No it doesn't. Will you be driving a shit-ton of miles? If so, you get to write off about 50 cents a mile (it changes from year to year, but it's always around 50.) I drive my Fit for work, and I get to write off damn near half of what I make each year. Makes taxes much easier to deal with! Just keep driving a reliable, efficient car, and you'll come out ahead.

Jobs are scarce these days. That's not a whole lot of money today, but it's a hell of a lot better than no job at all!
I haven't had health insurance since I was 18, aside from the very brief time my ex wife put me on her insurance (just before the divorce was final... she called it repayment for me paying for her cell phone the whole time we were split.)

Yeah i'll be driving my own vehicle. The guy that interviewed me said it was critical that i record on a daily basis what i drive for tax purposes. I won't be driving a ton of miles like you do but at least 100 miles a day in the general vicinity of the store. I get a fuel allowance which adjusts to the current rates which is nice.

Anyhow i figured i'd keep working this job till i was done with school at least because it is just throughout the week and during the day. I originally wanted a pizza delivering job at a parlor right down the street but i guess they weren't hiring.

Snap a picture of your odometer before and after your shift every day. Then keep an Excel spreadsheet with each day's starting and ending mileage. That's what I do. Makes it nice and easy to keep organized, and should you get audited, you have pretty solid records of what you claim. I don't imagine you'd get audited, though... not unless you try something REALLY shady!
Still, 100 miles a day is 500 miles a week. That's a writeoff of $250/wk. That's a $13,000 writeoff. That's pretty much 50% of what you'll be making annually. I think the lowest tax bracket is at $17k/yr, so you'll be taxed basically at the poverty level... while making a good deal more!

You'll also get nailed with a self employment tax, which isn't pretty... so keeping your tax liability as low as possible is DEFINITELY a good idea.
Keep receipts for anything you buy that you use for work as well. GPS, pens, paper, my accountants even have me write off my phone, since I use it heavily for work.
The only thing you can't write off is repair and maintenance of your vehicle, as that's part of the 50 cents per mile (unless the car was considered a work vehicle, and ONLY used for work... but that ends up being less of an advantage in the long run.)

Well, I just got home from my "training" where i rode around with a guy all day to learn some of the spots we'd be delivering to. The guy showed me how to fill out the clipboard with the info from the invoices and how to fill out the return slips; it seemed easy enough. It'll just take me some time to learn where all the stops and the names of the streets but they are turning me loose on my own tomorrow and on Saturday. I guess i'll be heavily depending on my GPS this weekend.

I found out that i get like 50 percent off on stuff at this shop which is nice as hell, too bad they don't have tires because i'll probably need those soon enough.

You can see the brands at this link .
