    Decisions Decisions

Well, as a lot of you know, I moved out of California and bacfk to my home. Delaware. Upon moving here a lot of you also know I had bought an EJ2. In other words a 95 civic dx coupe. It was 5 speed all oem and had little if any at all of the bells and whistles. It wasnt the same as driving a cb7 and was a lot more of a pain. I learned quick that when buying a civic to be very careful because people assume its a Honda they can beat on it and not take care of it.

I learned the hard way with this car. The clutch went out and the head gasket blew both in the same week. At the time I was unemployed so I had to sell it for an epic loss. After selling that, I was driving my uncles oldsmobile to and from work upon getting hired at Olive Garden. Well I am now taking a taxi to and from work because the olds is no longer around due to business I am not putting on here (which im sure you guys can figure out why it isnt around from that statement)

Point being, I have been saving my money and am now in a position to buy a car. Heres the catch though. I saw my Father buy his 07 Civic ex coupe with 10k original miles on it for a price of 15 grand and it really got me thinking. Then upon talking with him about this he said its time i get a co signer and start building credit as I am 21 and will soon need some sort of credit under my belt. He also said with my car situation being the way it is, I should get a cosigner on a younger lessa bused car so i dont have a repeat of my last 4 vehicles dumping money in repairs just to have some sort of failure in another area of the car.

Taking this advice, I started looking for a civic si. Then I stumbled upon this:
    http://www.unitedautosales.com/2007-...5/Details.aspx

So, I call and they did have it in stock. So, I had a good friend of mine pick me up from work and take me to the dealership. I walk in and say, "I understand you havea civic si on the lot and was wondering if i can look and test drive it." The guy responds " we sure do let me grab the keys and ill be right out there with you" So I look at it, pop the hood check the tires etc etc. Well the test drive begins.

I had drove a few si civics like this before so I knew what to expect. And needless to say it met the expectations and then some. It had the comfort of an si, the looks and feel of an si, and more importantly it took off like an si handled like an si, and vtec didnt skip a beat. I was impressed. But walking back in to talk pricing and payments, I see this:
    http://www.unitedautosales.com/2007-...9/Details.aspx

I say "hey bud before we do this how about you grab the keys to that mazda and the guy you were telling me about that knows rotaries" He did. Out came the salesman with one of his mechanics. We shook hands and asked i I had any particular questions and that he understood I knew Honda more then anything else and that he would be of help in any way possible. I pretty much asked for the 411 of the 13b 2 rotor in comparison to the k20 in the si. He proceeded to go into a bunch of wumbo jumbo that completley lost me. But, I was able to understand that the rotary revs a hell of a lot higher then the k and can make more power then the k when done right and of course vise versa.

So with that in mind I am doing my usual car inspection when i ask if I can test drive it. He says, sure hop in and lets go. He then pulled the dealer tag of the si and put it on the Mazda. Well, needless to say when he took me to the area where they let the customers get on it in the test drive, I did and HOLY SHIT. I put the pdal to the floor in first and that car just took off! the LSD worked like a champ and at 9500 RPMs the shift beep going off, the car still wanted to go. Upon throwing it into second, I noticed how much quicker and nicer it shifted and how smooth it was. Well after a couple pulls of gears 1-3 we went back to the dealership.

Upon getting back we went in and talked price and monthly payments and co signer stuff. Well after getting the whole run down on both cars and the run down on interest rate and potential interest rates I would be at, I was able to come to the conclusion that for as much fun as I had with the rx8 in comparison to the si, it was much more affordable and well within my price range as well. So my dad said he thinks the rx8 is the right choice for me.
But before i go out getting a cosigner and jumping in the car, I am doing careful and thorough research. I have heard both good and bad about the rx8 in comparison to hearing mostly good about the si. I hear that the rx8s like to flood and have as Deev would say "transmissions made of glass" How true that is? I dont know.

So I ask the most trusted car enthusiast I have stumbled upon in my years of wrenching cars. Which of the 2 do you think is the right choice and which of the 2 would you say is more reliable? Discuss.

Rx8 is weak sauce compared to the Rx7, and shouldn't even be named rx anything, my opinion.

Also, a rotary engine will NEVER last as long as a Honda I4

Just won't happen. I don't care how nice and friendly you are to the car. It's just nowhere near as reliable.

That's like comparing a cb7 to a dsm and asking which is more reliable.

I like RX8's especially the R3 special editions, but the safe way to play this given your situation would be the Honda.

Thats really a catch 22 in all honesty i would have to sacrifice something with either or. The hinda id be sacrificing financial stability and id be sacrificing reliabiloty with the rx8 from whats been said thus far.

I think those rotaries only go about 90k tops before you need to completely rebuild them.

Sure its 4k less than the Honda but there's probably a reason why its so cheap. I know those engines also like to eat oil and have consumption issues later on in life. They also stopped making the RX8s I think 2012 was the last year.

To me the Si has WAY more tuning potential and would be more durable than the RX8.

At 90k miles though? I mean i knew they flood and the injectors have a tendency to take a shit but i didnt know that they are done at 90k. What a shame that car was fun as hell to drive too.

90k is an overstatement. The rotaries are derivatives of racing engines and are meant to be driven as such, as well as maintained as such. You have to perform a special shutoff procedure, just because of that fact. The RX-8 transmission is rather shitty. You can swap that out for an RX-7's though, if you can find one. You really have to baby the engine; it's not a daily driver, and I definitely would not recommend it as one. That said, I believe those engines have a 100k mile, 8 year warranty. I would look into that before you even considered it. The exhaust system is known to fail prematurely as well, which will wreak havoc on the engine due to all of the sensors and management involved. That said, I believe the exhaust also has an 80k mile warranty; look into this as well.

My buddy recently purchased a 2004 RX-8 with ~90k miles for ~$4000. The engine was not running well, the cat was shot, and the clutch needed replaced. The coil packs were also completely shot. This took a fair amount of work to diagnose, but the thing is fun as hell to drive. It's definitely no daily, though. Get the Honda.

                Apologies for the jumbled thoughts!

Besides carbon build up in rotary engines (which most people dont actually know about) they are usually fine. Never really heard of issues like you guys are talking about. The rotary engine REQUIRES to be revved at least twice a week to remove carbon build up. As a DD i would say it's fiine. It's got its ups and downs. I would chose the RX-8 over the Civic any day.

Take care of the rotary and maintain it like you should (do A LOT of research on maintenance) and you are going to be fine. plus RWD and it's a 4 door

dont forget also your insurance is going to be a lot higher in a badged "sports cars" the civic is still a grocery getter with a little bit of hop ups from the factory so itll be a lot cheaper. Your maintenance will be a lot cheaper too. just my 2¢

Rotaries have short lifespans. They burn about as much gas as a V8. They burn oil (if you find one that doesn't, walk away... they're designed to burn oil!) MOST rotary owners have NO idea how to properly maintain a rotary engine, so that car could've been subject to 70,000 miles of dumbass neglect.

My old friend Becky had an automatic RX8 (only because she was impatient, and they didn't have a manual in stock...) The block cracked in 12,000 miles. Replaced under warranty... but still. THE BLOCK CRACKED!

Also, RX7 transmissions are well known to be super weak. Miss a shift, and you could break something. It's a common problem, especially for old or modified RX7s... so the fact that the RX7 transmission can be used isn't exactly a plus.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE rotaries, and the RX8 is a truly potent vehicle when driven properly. It's "underpowered" (funny when Honda guys say that, seeing as the S2000's output is VERY similar!) though it's plenty to move the car. The high point is the handling, rather than the acceleration.

Still, unless it's a second car... a toy... a weekend driver... the RX8 is a very poor choice. It's not a practical primary car.

You got it, man. Welcome back to the right coast!

Personally, I'd pick up something efficient and boring that you won't have any interest in modifying... then pick up a project to satisfy the tuner in you. My CB7 has been busted for 4 years, and it's not a problem since I have my bone-stock Fit.
