They make you pay tax on the current market value, which turns out to be more then the blue book. A way of avoiding this is they will give you a sheet that needs to be filled out by the buyer and the seller stating what is wrong with the car and why it was sold below the current market value. If there is nothing wrong with it then they will charge you tax on the current market value. I know! It's fucked up and it's not fair. Uncle sam can be a dick sometimes.

last i checked tax doesn't go by book value unless you can't verify your purchace price - i payed 800 for an 87 Jetta and was taxed $48 (6% PA), not $150, which at 2500 book value would have been the sales tax otherwise
and all we did was stand at the tag place with the guy selling us the car - the clerk saw the check
same with being at auction. i was taxed at 1300 for my cb7, not its 3600 book value...
it doesn't matter why you sell a car for whatever price. we could've walked in and said "i'm getting it for a hundred dollars" and they only would have taxed me six bucks...

NOPE IM FROM MASS, and they go by the trade in value of the car, not the blue book and not what u paid. even if the title says "gift" you hafta pay the trade 5% of the trade in value. i just did that shit. and im from plymouth.[deevergote]" It's not the car that makes the ricer... it's the ricer that ruins the car!"
