    Head up displays

Is anybody rocking an OBD1 HUD? I was looking into getting one for my VW, but there's soooo many options.

Also, if you do have one, what display did you get? What features does it have? And how did you go about getting a hall signal for RPM?

Most of the ones I've seen have been for OBD-II. I wonder how the visibility is in the middle of the day.

It takes a hall sensor for rpm? Is it programmable to fit different vehicles?

I'm just assuming that's the only way to do it on a mk2. The speedo is run by a cable from the transmission, and the RPM is from distributor signal.

I'm not sure, that's why I was wondering if anybody here has done it..

I had one from the factory on my 02 Grand Prix GTP. That car was mostly a huge pile of crap, but that feature was pretty freakin' neat. I missed it when I got rid of it!

You'll definitely need to get creative if your speedo is fully mechanical. Any electric signal can easily be intercepted, though.
If you do it on the VW, I'm definitely curious to see what's involved. If you want to do it on a CB7, that would probably actually be pretty easy (and I'm surprised nobody here has done it yet, that I've seen!)

Another option for a mechanical system is to use something that uses GPS. My Garmin GPS does that, as does a few apps that I downloaded for my iPhone (came in handy when the tech at Honda forgot to plug my VSS back in on my Fit after changing my clutch... I taped my phone to my cluster, until it overheated.)
You might be able to build such a system using one of the compact computers on the market... Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Hell, you could probably just use an old iPhone or Android! I think there are even some apps out there that are intended to be used as a HUD. Just turn it on and stick it on the dash.

Well... GPS would cover the speed. But I'd still need to figure out RPM. I would like water temperature too, but hey. I might just get the Garmin one! I get a discount at Best Buy.

If the RPM is a linear voltage signal, it wouldn't be too much work to whip up a voltage-to-frequency converter to imitate a hall signal.

Mechanical speedo is a problem...maybe a linear pot or something?

Thinking about building one from a Pi. It's very feasible to do and can do quite a bit more as well!
