I need all of ur HELP!!!!!!!

I need all of ur HELP!!!!!!!
Long story short, I'm 17 and last sat I got into my frist accident. I backed into a Cavalier and made a big dent on his passenger door. After finding the owner I told him to find an estimate and we'll go from there, got his numbers and went home. ( btw I had about 4 witnesses)

Today, he phoned me and told me the cost to fix the damage is about $1700, cuz he has to replace the whole door and he said the place he went to was a friend of his.......

Now I'm going to the poilce to report this accident and later claim my insurance which will bring it up to who knows how high.

    Question

1: Is the cost of replacing a door come to $1700??

2: Should I bring his car to another place to look at it??

3: Who thinks he's trying to f*&k me over cuz I'm young..???

lesson that I learned from this: NEVER drive a car when ur angry, I backed into the car because I was controled by personal reason and I'm luck it wasn't a kid that I ran over!!!

    HELP!!

$1700 sounds steep for a door. Especially a cavalier, seeing as theres a ton of those out there, theres gotta be a door salvagable somewhere.

Im not sure how extensive the damage is though, it might be more than just a door?

It probably would cost $1700 if he'e getting the parts from the dealer... which he probably is. If your unsure about it call a few body shops and get an estemate yourself. That way your going into the situation with knowlege.
I think your going to have a problem with the police report and you insurance company for not reporting it right away though.

Really, if you can afford it, it would be better to pay it without the police and your insurance company getting involved because the police will probably wright you a ticket and the insurance company will raise your rates! From what I understand, the cops have to wright a ticket whenever there was damage that an insurance company will have to pay for because there has to be someone at fault.... in this case you. So in the long run, you'll end up paying more if you get them involed.

      Hope this helps... good luck!

Oh, by the way the law here is that ANY damage over $500 must be reported to the poilce.

As of now just came back from police and no they did not ticket me......

$1700 CAD I guess isn't that bad, most likey going to take it out of my own pocket!!!

Most of the people I have talk to said that its the paint that costed a lot not the door......

Paint is not expensive at all, especially on a stock ass color like a Cavalier.

If it's just his door that needs repainted, approximately $40 will be enough for paint, and about $30 for a good primer for it.

$100 estimated for paint and materials..

Tell your insurance company what he said about the estimate and that he said he took it to a "friend"... they are bastards and they hate getting ripped off...they will fight it if they want...

Don't tell anyone about being pissed off...

and remember that it is illegal for ins companies to raise rates for a claim... so in reality they will pay out keep your rate what it is...unless you have a shitty policy and then in a few months they will raise it for some "other" reason...

you have a little while to worry about it...

this aint the end of the world either... shit happens and life goes on... ins companies do this all day everyday...just be as detailed as you can making the claim... and don't forget to tell them about this guy's "friend" doing the estimate...

??? what are you talking about? once you renew your policy, your ins should run a MVR (driving history) and having an at-fault accident on there WILL change your premium... at least every state i've livged in that's what I've seen

but anyway, i still agree about telling your ins:

                        my advice:

tell your insurance and they'll take care of it - you'll have a deductable to pay, but that way you know he won't fuck you over on pricing.

they WILL add what's called a surcharge to your insurance premium next time around -- but for so little damage (>$2000) it won't be that much and it will slowly become less each time you renew

yeah it sucks but we all have an accident under our belts (most of us anyway) its a right of passage

let your insurance handle it - it's less stress on you and less cash in the long run. plus it gives you good practice dealing with evil people like claims adjusters

                        good luck

That's basically what I was saying... why he had some time until the rate went up...

It is a federal law that they cannot raise your premiums in response to a claim... but they get around it by just waiting until you renew...

on a side note: that whole "he got an estimate from a friend" thing seems really shady to me...and I do mean REALLY shady.
