    Computer HELP... modem/router

i recently bought a router to split my moms comcast cable modem. i got a netgear mr814(im not using the wireless capability)... and randomly the connection will go out. never while im using the computer, but sometime through the night.

all the lights on both peripherals are still on, but nothing is working. to get it working again i always have to reset the modem or router and my computer... today i ended up resetting all three before i could get it to work.

im pretty sure i remember it happening when nothing was going on with my computer, but last night i know i had a torrent program running. and at a friends house his connection completely goes down when he turns on bittorrent. but when he shuts it off, it comes right back on. so i dont think its program related.

so whats going on? do i just need to get a better router? this was the cheapest one they had.

try upgrading the firmware of the router, www.netgear.com

i think they have insturctions on the site on how to do it. Make sure your write down ALL of your settings on a piece of paper first before you upgrade the firmware.

I have the mr814 version 1 router (there are 2 different versions of this router) as well and at first BT would crash the router everytime. What I did to get around this, was first upgrade the firmware to 4.13 and capped my upload speed in BT to about 25% of my full upload speed. Since then I've had relatively no problems. Sometimes my internet would go off.. but that's like once every few months or so..

Also what you can try is where it says "Idle Timeout" in "Basic Settings" put 0. (This is only applicable if you require a login to use the internet)

In the future, I would suggest on going with Linksys.

i dunno if they changed it or not, but once you login to your router, there might be something called "Maintainence" and "Router Upgrade" it'll ask you for the file and then you locate the img file and then hit upload.

i would email tech support to be sure though, i dunno why they would include an executable file with the img..

but email tech support first before upgrading the firmware to be 100% sure

What would cause my cable modem to do this? I'm not running any special software or anything that would cause interference. Sometimes the cable light on my modem will go out and to get it to come back on I have to turn power to the modem off and turn it back on (resetting doesn't do anything). I have a Linksys cable modem connected through my ethernet card. The Motorolla I had before did the same thing. When the modem works it's FAST.. but about once a day it'll go out, usually around noon.

When my modem loses communication with the server, it's the servers fault, not my modems'. Chalk it up to blaming adelphia for no net. And since their contract claims internet delivery is on a "best effort" delivery system, I can't be reimbursed when it goes out. $50 a month should be only when it works 100% of the time! , anyway mine usually goes out around 3am-6am but not everyday...

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

Why? Because you have cable, that's why. This is what happens when you decide to share a single-pair network with thousands of people. I hate advertisements for cable ISPs that bash DSL. I'll gladly take a nice DSL line over cable, EVEN if it is slower and costs more. Reliability isn't the only reason.

Weird. I have cox cable and I've never had a problem that was their fault or they didn't tell me ahead of time about (maintenance notices of outages). The only time my cable ever goes out is if my computer doesn't boot up properly, which requires a restart and its fixed.

I have had problems with wireless routers however and forgot how I fixed them. I know it had to do with an automatic time out issue, XPs built in Firewall, the Routers built in Firewall, and my Sygate Firewall having compatibility issues. It took about a week for me to figure it all out, and technical support is never, EVER helpful.
