    Danm the Chevy

Took my dad's 1998 checy z71 pickup today........

after driving fo like 15 min i notice a strainge sound..... a visit @ the chevey garage---------------> they tell met the tranny is all messed up...... (50k miles on it), it happens all the time they say, it seemed to be a common problem on 96-98 chevy's...

we don't have em straight roads over here, so there is a bit more strain on the tranny... but that's no excuus for a 1998 pick up....

They tell me there are 60 k mile chevrolets w already 5 (!!!!) new tranny's.................tssssssssssss

it turns out to cost about $ 4000.- to fix the tranny...........

German autobahn's (highway's ) are known corvette killers, they ALL burn the tranny faster than a full tank of gas (overheating etc). There's no shop over here that wants to repair a corvette tranny, beacause of the speeds driven in the greman highway's (i'm living near the boarder w germany)

I'm surely sticking to jappanese or european cars, capable of doing >100 mph constantly...

yeah i had a 96 Z71 with a 5 speed and that thing went through about 4 transmissions the two years i owned it till i finally broke a part that has never been broken before ever...took three months to get the part so i just sold the truck for what i owed and got a nissan maxima (R.I.P) and then the honda after the nissan got killed...i now own a 96 tahoe for a winter/family vehicle..with a beefed up tranny the same shop that did my buds 77 chevy with 12 inch lift , 454, and 500 bhp. so then the fuel filter and fuel pump went out xmas eve...lol still love chevy though.

its like nothing in the world. definition of relaxation.

It seems that American car designers are horribly shortsighted. All American cars are perfect for their purpose, but they don't last unless they are painstakingly maintained. The Vettes are fast, and speed and power are their purpose, but they can break pretty easily. The Viper is the same way (so I've heard). The trucks are powerful as hell, and can haul anything, but they also break. My cousin (who is a mechanic) told me that the Chevy pickups with the dualie rears are using the same transmission as the standard trucks. Supposedly, the dualies put more strain on the transmission.

I'm not saying that American cars are bad, or saying that they'll all break... I'm just saying that overall, European and Asian cars are usually built to last a bit longer. I guess they don't share the disposable mentality of the Americans!
