    Non-ipod Mp3 Player

on my recent vacation to florida (total of 33 hours driving) i have fallen in love with my little brothers mp3 player (ipod mini). however everyone and their mom has an ipod so if i get one its no big deal. what is another good option? i am currently looking at the i river. it seems to be a lot more practical than the ipod since it has a color screen and can play movies... what do you guys think and does anyone have experience with any non-ipod mp3 players???

get the picture ipod if its that big of a deal to you. ive got a 20 gig and its fabtabulous. who cares if everyone else already has one, its all about having something that works and is good.
but if you dont like the ipod, go with something else.

imo, the mini is really ***. i mean who pays so much for so little storage, when a 20gb can be had for 299$? i had 200 songs when i got my first ipod about 3yrs ago. that was a 15gb 3rd gen. then i said it was fubar'ed, and utilized its protection plan, got me a 4th gen 20gb, i love it. but i wish i would've bought the protection plan again, because if anything happens i'm stuck with this one, it was just i couldn't afford to pay 50$ at the time where i returned the 3rd gen.

and the pioneer, alpine, and clarion headunits have direct interfaces for the ipod now, that can't be beat. but unfortunately if i pick up this jensen flip out tv, i won't be able to utilize those interfaces.

oh most definitely mike, i knew that, but thanks for the help bro. i mean i would've enjoyed the fact that these direct interfaces show all the tracks on the screen of the headunit and charge the ipod while its connected.

do you notice any loss of sound quality?

i dunno why, but i've been obsessed with the thought of being able to watch movies in my car recently. i just don't want to have a pioneer/alpine screen as those cost upwards of 1000$ and are highly targeted for theft, with or without the faceplate. jensen's are sold for around four and change on ebay.

yeah, the display option would be nice, but alas, i shall live. and the non charge thing does suck, but i rarely, well, i have never driven for over 12 hrs at a time, so charging it for me isnt a necessity as far as being in the car is concerned. As for sound quality i havent noticed any diff and it sounds great in the altima. In the passat i want to buy the interface for it but i dont want to spend about 300 bucks, so i just use a tape in their since it has a cdplayer/tape deck and with the monsoon sound system its muy bueno.
one fo the recruiters i work for has the photo ipod with the $100 dock that plugs in your lighter and cradles it and charges it and its mad phat. but alas, lowly ol' specialists dont make that much money

what did you have? i planned on doing a pioneer deh-mp80, with ipod interface, and then using aux to a 8in widescreen portable dvd player mounted flat on the top of the dash (area where the clock is) using one of those non-slip grip for cell phone/pdas.

but then i said, fuck it, maybe i'd get the motorized jensen, i just don't know if i'd like to be looking down in that area while watching a movie for two hours.

                    bam.
the dvd player went up and under the glovebox. I had it taken out in that picture.
                    god i miss that car.

sorry flaco, but I think the forementioned things somewhat relate to your thread. maybe now you'll consider mp3 and video playback in your car.

mike, looks like a good setup. low budget, great execution. same as i plan to do. except i will put the dvd/tv on the flat part of the dash (up top) or motorized flip out.

edit: upon doing some research online, i think i will be better off with my original plan, as i don't need the tv tuner anyhow. and the portable dvd player offers better security options as well.

                        Iriver is good
Creative zen touch (not the mini ones) is good.
                        mini creative zen is good.
perception digital stuff is cheap but good.
you could also consider minidisk player if you want to.--> better battery life and you can bring multiple disks. and it supports atrac3

The iPod mini is good for its size, but yeah the bigger ipods are better. I myself own a 20gb ipod from the 2nd gen and it has been a champ. I have already gone through my AV setup phase and had a Clarion VRX935VD with the 7 inch touch screen, TV tuner and 5.1 digital sorround. I never wanted to leave my car! I had this setup in the Toyota and removed it before I sold it.

Being able to leave the GF in the car watching TV while I did some stuff was priceless! She never complained as long as there was something to watch. Also be careful with the screen clarity of the cheaper models. Nothing could beat the clarity of the clarion screen, except some other high end models could match it, but that is it. I also had a roof mount flip down clarion screen, and the clarity was no where near the headunit one. It was good, but not as clear.

GL, and for the money I rather have a full fledge ipod than a mini.

                          X

P.S. I would love to get me another clarion, and this time I would make it the VRX755VD with the ipod interface.

                          Check it out http://www.clarion.com/usa/products/.../VRX755VD.html

They can be had for ~$750 on ebay
