If your car is completely stock, then dealerships are a safe bet. Though any reputable mechanic should be as well... Once a car has custom work done to it, dealerships are no better than anyone else, IMO.

I had a guy at a Chrysler dealership tell me that he tightened the belts in my transmission (which was slipping, 87 Dodge Shadow ES) and therefore fixing the problem. I was 19, a new driver, completely clueless about cars, and I still knew he was full of crap... They definitely play on people's ignorance.

Of the 3 members posting in this thread originally, I'm the only one that's still here.

I realized that while working at Mercedes Benz and Ferrari. It is only worth it sometimes. For example, if one has an electrical problem on let's say an Ferrari 550 M... Who realy has the computers or the know how to trouble shoot that...

The dealer is good sometimes, not always...

I had to go there for them to press the bearing into my hub for my new rotors. See what I mean.

                          yes and no

NO for most things like tires oil and stuff HOWEVER if you own a VW for about 70% of the stuff go to a dealer you HAVE to use a VW scan tool to change most of the stuff on a v dub

Yes, dealerships are worth it, for older cars. Because they are trained by the OEM, Dealerships are much faster and more effecient at diagnosing difficult to find issues.

I've found, they are actually not very expensive once it comes to delicate of complicated fixes.

...to change oil, even your lazy uncle will do.
