but this really grinded my gears.

was working at the cafe last night and was helping this older white man with his 20 year old asian girl friend. (which actually wasnt bad but she probably was a fob)

so i asked what i coulkd help them with...the guy responds, "nee-how" (for those who dont know, it's hello in mandarin)
except, im not fucking mandarin.

i stare at the guy and say, "ok"
the guy continued to be the complete ass that he was and eventually sat down.

the big deal that im making here is...why did he assume that i spoke mandarin and furthur reveal his stupidity by trying to speak a language that i DO NOT SPEAK to me?

i dont fucking speak mandarin and people assume that i do!!!! i am fucking CANOTNESE from HONG KONG!!!!

i find it as a disgrace, that people thinking i come from some "red" country which in fact im probably more white-washed than him.

i never speak any foreing languages to anyone that looks like they might be from somewhere else because it seems kind of lame. even when i go to a mexican restaurant i dont say que pasa amigo to my server, even if just heard him speaking spanish to someone else.
were in america, we speak english here. if i go to europe, im not going to jizz all over myself if someone in germany says whats up man, so why would i expect them to do so.

What you should do, if you know cantonese, is just continue the conversation then when hes like uhhhh...be like oh Im sorry, you didnt understand me because im cantonese not chinese!

He is Chinese, but he speaks Cantonese, which is pretty much everyone from Hong Kong, whereas the rest of China speaks Mandarin, which is what I speak. I get that shit too, it's sort of annoying but I just keep talking in english and pretend like I didn't hear that.
