    **help** Computer running very hot

for the past couple months now its been around 65*c. too hot from what ive read, but technically ok. today for the first time, it hit 70*c, and a warning popped up. what can cause the extreme heat? i think i asked in a thread before, but i couldnt find it.

i have an epox mobo and athlon 2100+ processor. the system is quite a few years old. the case is farely dust free and all the fans work. will processors run hot if theyre on their way out?

i bought a new, bigger heatsink/fan today but i havent had a chance to install it... just wanted to ask ahead of time, so if this doesnt solve it, what else could it be?

thats odd, maybe it has something to do with the inefficiency of the cpu as it ages, that would be my guess. Does your cpu run slow? do you have something running in the background taking your system resources?

I just built my first system, and its an amd as well running around 40C for the mobo and the cpu fyi.

I would make sure that the unit is up off the carpet and can breathe freely. if all else fails get liquid cooling!

I dont know if this will help you or not but every amd computer ive built ran hot. I've never fried a chipset either.

really? is it normal for them to run hotter than "normal".

a little update... the heatsink is huge compared to the stock one that came with the processor. my computer has only been on for 10min since the switch, but its running at 45*c. hopefully itll stay this way.

is it overclocked or anything? doubtful, since Im sure oyu would have included that information from the start, but, that is one cause of high temperatures in air cooled PC's. another option would be water cooling, but Im sure you would much rather build a new computer than add water cooling ot your current setup.

                problem solved.

seriously though, airflow is the biggest factor. make sure the location of your computer has good airflow. dont take the sides off the computer, this will actually make it run hotter. Make sure your power supply is functioning properly. If its still a problem, get some new CPU grease, like arctic silver or something, and redo your heatsink and fans.

x2, the oem thermal heatpads seem to kinda degrade after awhile and cause the processor to run hot. Amd processors are also known to run a bit hotter than Intel's. Arctic Silver 5 or one of their newer thermal compounds will help a lot especially with your new heatsink. After installing my thermaltake fan and arctic silver 5 i had around a 15 degree temp drop

you are correct on all accounts. ive considered building a new machine... but mine still works, so im not too worried about it right now.

really??? i never knew having the side open would make it run hotter. i always assumed it would help bring air in and cool the case.

i think i will be picking up a new power supply soon. ive had this one since the tower was built and i dont remember how, but one of the two fans the supply is equiped with is broken off.

*now that its been running for awhile, the temp has rised to 53*c, but it doesnt seem to be going any higher than that. so the problem seems to be solved for now.

clean the inside. it's dusty I bet, clogging the heatsinks under the fans.

Might also wana check the voltage your CPU is running at, since everything else is listed.

But here is a nice checklist I use when my CPU temp is odd.

1: Check for dust, and room temp
                          2: Airflow in case
3: Check cpu grease, and heatsink placement
                          4: Voltage and clockspeeds.

Also 51C should be an ok temp for full cpu load with a stock HSF.

few more things, make sure the sides are on your computer, one it will keep dust out and two its kinda the same effect as windows up on the hiway. also make sure like people said you have good thermal paste contacting between the heatsink, also make sure you run AMD cool n Quiet software.
