    it's been a while but i'm back!!

why do you feel the need to upgrade your VM? adding more physical memory will help a LOT more.

upgrading RAM is crazy easy. I have a gig and a quarter in my laptop, it really helps.

And if i could swim I'd swim out to you in the ocean

          I'll refrain from making jokes....

Virtual memory is your hard drive.

Right click my computer, go to the advanced tab

under performance click settings, on the window hit advanced

bottom of window it says virtual memory and a button labeled change

select the hard drive you want to apply it to (if you have more than one) and you can set it to a custom amount, click set to set the amount and ok to close the window. A restart may be required.

          NOW

having said that let me say this. Windows automatically chooses the size of your paging file for you by default. If you have the space it will likely pick the size of your RAM x2. Chances are you will never max out your paging file at these settings. I have 2 gigs of memory and at its limit my computer has never passed 1600 megs of paging file use. I doubt increasing your paging file will fix any performance problem you may have.

The speed of the hard drive is very slow compared to the speed of the ram, therefore if the computer can go to the ram it will be much faster than if it has to go to the hard drive. Also increasing your paging file will decrease the amount of useable hard drive space.

If you could get enough memory and disable your paging file, you could run much faster than someone who has to depend on ram+hard drive....

So unless you have a good reason, don't bother with your paging file. Just go buy more, better ram.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

rumor has it, you'll be able to directly plug usb memory sticks into any usb slot on windows vista and use it as ram!

I am gonna reformat probably tomorrow (RC2)

I'll let ya'll know how that turns out.

its probably something more like virtual memory/page swapping space. there is no way even USB2.0 is fast enough to emulate REAL physical ram.

exactly right, it will act as swap/virtual memory/paging file

whatever you want to call it. Not a terrible idea, but I'm sure someone in linux will figure out a way to do it (if they haven't already). Then again linux handles memory differently from windows, so it might not help

I agree with this more as each day passes....I don't think its too terrible but more "too little, too late, too expensive, not worth it, whatever"
