    Making Beats

I have alot of homeboys and everytime I go over to their crib they are making beats on their computers, I always say to myself "i dont have time to sit down and do that shit." but it's like im getting sucked into it now. Do any of you guys make beats? alot of my homeboys start off with Fruity Loops and I think Cool Edit Pro. I want to get a copy of these, can yall post up some links, and are any of yall making beats in your free time?

I've messed around with Fruity Loops a little bit. Nothing serious. It takes a while to get used to using it.

Pretty powerful tool. I'd love to get a hold of a copy of the newest version.

Sonic Foundry is an oldie but an all time classic.

I used try and compose some serious techno tracks back in the day i thought they came out alright.

this is what i was going to suggest. ive use that and my dm2, a really crappy toys-r-us digital turntable system. i boutht it from my friend for like 10 dollars, it was pretty fun, but i wouldnt use it professionally.

For hip hop production, I find it easier to make beats through a sampler like an Akai MPC4000/MPC2000XL. You can sequence and make drum patterns on the fly. If you want more disctinctive sounds, you can add on more filters to your setup. Roland's SP series is also good. Their older 808 (from the 80's) is still used alot for drum programming as well as the 1200 for sampling.

But the thing with production is that this equipment is not cheap. If you're really on a budget, you can start out by using a Akai MPD16 drum controller and hooking it up to your computer and using Reason 3.0 to load up your samples.

Not really beats in the sense you mean, but it's some electronic stuff I messed with. I used an OLD version of Tuareg. The program was extremely simple to use, though it was prone to crashing. I had a lot more, but this is all that remains. Tuareg is still free for the simple version, I think... you have to pay for the advanced, but everthing I did was with the basic one.
