This lady my mom works with wants me to detail her car and says she will pay me, but I have no idea how much a reasonable amount would be. How much would you guys say I should ask for assuming I'll have to wash the outside, wax it, vacuum the inside, brush out all the dust and crap, and clean panels and armor-all?

Considering a good pro doesn't even charge $200 for all that I think you're way out of line for an amateur.
If you're just waxing, no clay or polish, I'd say $100 is absolute max you can charge. Even that would be expensive for a pro.
For $200 you'd better be claying, using a swirl remover, polishing, sealing and then waxing the outside. Not to mention polishing the headlights/tailights, cleaning out the wheel wells, polishing exhaust tips, polishing (not just cleaning) the windows, etc.
On the inside I would definitely expect a full shampoo of ALL the upholstery, cleaning all the vinyl surfaces, picking dirt out of crevices with a toothpick, etc.
Even then, I wouldn't pay $200 for all of that.Last edited by NutBucket; 04-12-2007, 10:53 PM.

I say $50 because I have the supplies. And thats a wash at the car wash, drive home, clay bar, conditioning/cleaning wax, regular wax. Windows, carpet clean carpets, clean and detail the inside (get your toothpick out). Also the wheels and tires. I've done this about 2-3 times in the past few months.
on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

I have been trying for a while to get a small business of my own started, with no luck so far but, I have checked around and I am about $50 less then a professional shop. Here is my charges..
Complete Detailing of Vehicle Includes:
*Washing
*Engine Bay Cleaned and Detailed
*Under Carriage Powerwash
*Trunk Cleaned and Detailed
*All Wheels are Removed and Detailed on Both Sides
*Suspension is Cleaned and Detailed while wheels are off
*Interior is Cleaned and Detailed. (If requested, carpets and seats may be steam cleaned to remove stains, $20 per hour.)
*Body is Hand Waxed (Truck beds are washed out, inside of bed waxing not included, but can be done at $20 per hour.)
*Windows are cleaned
Pricing:
*Small and Mid Size cars, Standard Cab Trucks: $185
*Large Cars, small SUVs, 3/4 ton trucks, Extended Cab, and Quad Cab Trucks: $215
*1 Ton Trucks and Large SUVs: $250 (Dual rear wheels and 8 lug wheels will not be removed)
Vehicle may need to be kept over night to complete detailing depending on condition prior to service being rendered. Service times run from 10-16 hours to complete detailing of vehicle.
Just some food for thought. Detailing usually varies by location, references, and training. Like myself, I have no training, unless you call being self taught training. References are all friends and family. Later
