    awesome pilot

Great young pilot from PA. Outstanding job !!!

    Can you beat this?

    Afgan Helicopter Photo

Can't add anything else to this 1.. Picture is worth 10,000 words ! If you don't think our military pilots earn their pay .. you need to take a look at this picture .. and then look again and realize what you're seeing

This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission. The pilot is a PA National Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the ass end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack on a steep mountain cliff and hold it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear. If this does not impress you ... nothing ever will. Gives me the chills and a serious case of the vertigo ... I can't even imagine having the nerve ... much less the talent and ability ... God Bless our military.

Actually, that training is probably standard procedure. One of the missions of the Chinook is EVAC, under any adverse circumstances. A good pilot sure. But he was just doing his job.

P.S. Anybody who gets shot at for a living earns their pay.

and should earn twice their pay....

Aren't those Chinooks something of a problem?

I hear they go down 'often'....at least that is what's portrayed in the mass media.

The chinooks have an issue with balance as I recall. Doing a maneuver like that is hard as hell and keeping it stable. Of course it is standard practice but even in practice its not the same as the real thing. Practice is in a somewhat controlled environment. This on the other hand is different with terrain and all that good stuff.

originally, yes the osprey was bad, but the did a complete overhaul of the design and fixed what was wrong.

The biggest issue with the Osprey was the fact that it didn't fly exactly like an airplane or a helicopter, but rather like both. The part of the flight envelope that made it so hard to handle was the transition from vertical to horizontal flight and back. Helicopters and airplanes don't do this, as they are always both flying respectively the same way.

That is also what makes the Harrier so difficult to fly.

The main solution from the Marine Corps was to seperate their flight program into 3 different divisions. Fixed wing, Helo, and Osprey.

I have never heard anything about that, although that doesn't mean it isn't true.

Yes, the training is in a controlled environment, but so is all training. One of the biggest things pilots are taught is how to apply knowledge to situations that don't exist, or have never existed before. EVERY pilot encounters situations they haven't been trained for, and it is their skills that allow them to make the decisions to get out.

Besides, you would probably be surprised just how real the training environment can be.

The Harrier was old technology though. And nowadays with technology the Sims help out a lot more which is a definite ++.

The Osprey had a catastrophic launch taking the lives of a few pilots. Later on they edited the flaws and now I dont think the marines use them anymore. I rarely see anymore around. Usually just see chinooks and some other combat helicopters laying around. The Ospreys might be used in other areas but I havent seen one in the air for the longest time.

The Chinooks' did have a problem. Machine components were cleaned with an organic material that came from corn. There were problems with pieces of this material jaming up the rear oil squirter. no oil = wear. This wear caused the timing of the rotors to go off and therefore the props collided, broke, and the chopper fell. Resolved, now they're all good.

The osprey also had problems, but from what I hear an overhaul has solved the problems. edit: The USMC -is- using the osprey. You'll see them a lot more now :P
