94 ford explorer overheating then not overheating

it has pretty high mileage and i cant go past 60 without the engine beginning to shake. I check the oil and water daily. Everything is ok with it but yesterday the needle on the water temp began to go up then i would let go of the gas and it would go down. over and over. i am driving this as my dd cause my f22a1 blew up so til i fix it i need to drive this...could this be a false reading or what else could it be..thanks

Can you be more specific when it happens such as city driving, accelerating from a standstill, highway etc... I would pick the thermostat but I want to see mroe info. Could be as easy as a fan not kicking on when it should or bad fan switch.
