    Need Ford transmission advice

I am treading lightly on this subject so I thought I would post it here to see if anybody had any Ford experience.

Edit: This problem was happening before I changed the fluid by the way.

My grandmas 03 Grand Marquis has a transmission shudder going on. It only has 62k miles on it and its barely been driven the past 2 years since shes getting up in age and she doesn't drive much anymore. I have noticed this vibration when its on the interstate or in overdrive. At 61k miles (year ago) I changed the fluid by having to take off the pan (I have a story behind this as well). I also tried to drain the torque convertor but it didn't have a drain on it (I really can't remember but if it did I am sure I drained it). It received fresh Castrol Mercon V which was what this car takes. I also changed the filter on it as well. After driving it for the past week to put some miles on it, it starts to shudder intermittent going down the highway or whenever in o/d. I haven't tried turning o/d off to see if that was the problem. I have been told I should have flushed the transmission, but with my Honda mentality, I told grandma the mechanic was just trying to make money and it may not help the problem or make it worse (because if you flush our transmissions they fail) and she doesn't want to have to go through the money to have that replaced just yet.

But here is the story behind the trans pan. When I pulled the pan off, I noticed this yellow bobber looking thing floating around in the pan. I didn't know what the hell it was and I couldn't figure out where the little bastard went. So I left it out and chunked it in the trash. I figured if the trans didn't act right to start with then it wasn't a problem.

Her 97 Town Car does the same thing I don't know if the problem was ever resolved but that vibration was MUCH worse.

I made an attempt to change her spark plugs back at 61k, but you have to take the fuel rail off to get to them. And honestly from all the talk about the spark plugs blowing out, I really don't want to be held liable for have to put new heads on this beast.

Can anybody hand me some insight on this. I know she needs to get rid of her Ford products and I tried to get her to by an Accord but she said hell to the no back in 03. Help?

Well on the Mazda forums (which Ford partially owns) its a bad idea to do a complete trans flush, but instead should be done sparsely over months. Atleast for the MPV's.

I ingnored that rule anyways and did a complete flush with 165k miles. Still runs fine. Not perfect, but it's better than the spassy jerking it had when accelerating.

Not sure if it's relevant to all auto trans, but the way I drained out my torque convertor was to disconnect one of the outgoing hoses and aim it at a drain pan, start the car and let it spit the fluid out for a minute. Worked like a charm for me.

Hmmm ok. It also looks like its got too much fluid in it. It says to check while the car is running and with it hot and its way past the hash marks on the dip stick but it gets me thinking because it says do not ad if the fluid reads on the hash marks. Im glad I will NEVER own a Ford product EVER.

Pour a bottle of seafoam trans flush in it, drive it for a little bit and then pull the pan again and drain the fluid out. When you put it back on put a bottle of Lucas in it. Pour the Lucas in the pan before you put the pan on.
It is shuddering because of tarnish and sludge and it's when the torque converter is locking up.

The yellow thing is a factory plug and is meant to be thrown away. Also means the pans never been taken off.

Also you don't need to pull the fuel rail off. Just looks like you do. You can get to the plugs it's just a pain to get to some of them. Now is the time to though because if they blow out it's alot harder to tap threads. Just throw so double platinum plugs in with antiseeze and youll be all set.

You are absolutely right. And not to mention every time I touch one its a BITCH.

I did the spark plugs today and no change. My grandma doesn't drive much and not too far so I think I will just let it die on its own.
