What kind of amp do I need?

    Hello,

I recently got a brand new 10" kicker comp from a coworker for free,
But im not sure what size amp to use for it.
Does anyone have this subwoofer? If so what amp did you have?

    Thanks for the help.

First what are you trying to accomplish?

Do you want bass constantly knocking screws loose? Do you wanted mild bass, and tons of clarity in the cabin?

Find out what the rating is on the sub (how many ohms they are rated at, rms power value, trunk dimensions if the sub is going into the trunk), and then someone may be able to assist if you need a mono, two, three, four, etc. channel amp, 1 ohm, 2 ohm, 4 ohm, 8 ohm load, etc. yatta, yatta, yatta...

Then, brands and power levels can then be considered.

Everyone's preferences will differ. Just some food for thought.

Well im looking for mild bass with clarity.
The sub is rated for 4 ohms but not sure what the wattage is.
This is going in my 4th gen prelude so the trunk is really small.

Kicker comp? 500 watts rms. Focus more on the box than the amp in this case.

Will you be running any additional components inside the cabin (ie. 6" x 9", 5.5", 6.25", tweeters, etc.), and if so, will you need additional power to fuel these components?

If not, a nice 200 Watt RMS amp will get you clean solid mild bass. You don't even have to go that extreme. You can if you want though; that's always an option. Find an amp that matches the ohm rating of the for the best transitions possible.

I haven't been into systems for a while, and mine eventually will be upgraded, but decently done; mildly of course.

I am and always have been a fan of Alpine. I have other companies that I like (Rockford, Sony, Kenwood, US Amps, and a host of others), but I haven't been keeping up on that stuff. I will when the time comes for it though. Just read/research, see what's popular/good rating, what appeals to you, and have fun.

Keep in mind budget as well. A good quality amp from a good company can range from about ~$350 - ~$1000+. That's also something to consider.

          Deuces.

350 for that setup? i think thats way to much. a 200 watt rms 2ohm amp shouldnt be that much. i thinking more like 150, 100 if he finds a good deal. go to best buy. you'll find what your looking for.

wrong sub man. the comp has a 150w rms rating, the cvr has 500w rms. but ur correct he should concentrate more on the box.

for that sub a dual 300w amp from wally world should do it, 55 bucks i belive is the price. i owned one and she powered a 10" pioneer that i had very nicely.

It's very possible the type of amps that "I like" have gotten cheaper over the years. I know for a fact the quality low wattage (~250 watts peak) mid to high grade Alpines, Kenwoods, US Amps, Rockford, etc. start at around $300 or so. I guess we all have different ways to shop and find bargains.

Power is cheap though. 500wrms mono's are plentiful and easy to find. Plus he'll have more than enough power on tap if he decides to upgrade.

good point, and its always better to turn the gain down instead of up. less stress on the amp and cleaner crisper signal to the sub.

The quality amps I used to love as a teen (that are still very popular) are still going for some chunk. I've briefly looked at some D-class mono/2/3/4 channel amps (quality), and their still about the same price range. Some of the well establish reputable companies have D-class amps (their mid-grade lines) rated at 250-400 watts are starting at about $250 and up. I did see some smaller amps ( 25x4 at 4 ohms, 50x2 bridged) for a bit less. So I guess if you don't need tons of power, $200 or so would be good.

If quality and reputation isn't that much, stop by your local Best Buy and pick up something convenient. Have fun.

Companies that I am still fond of 'til this day that you may want to look into and research.

                          Alpine
                          Rockford Fosgate
                          Kenwood
                          Cerwin Vega
                          US Amps
                          Pioneer
                          Phoenix Gold
                          ...and a host of others.

Also, some people may frown upon this. Most engineers that work for a company develop products to work flawless with with their other products. It sometimes is a great union when you keep all components the same, and in the same class (ie. speakers, amps, head unit, etc.)

I recently had 1 Kicker comp 10 4 ohm SVC in a 1.5 cubic foot slot ported box tuned to 35hertz.

The sound was clear, and loud as hell in my wagon.

I ran an old school Pioneer GM-X922 which is 80x2 watts and 320 bridged.

That amp will run your 10 good and you could also ad another later if 1-10 doesnt cut it for you.

The amp in the link is a MB Quartz (good company IMO, especially for mid and high speakers).
