ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Smoke.......

First off, thanks to the mebers who helped me in my last question, I got my issues resolved due to your replys, thanks again. For my new question, My cb has 297,XXX on it and runs great,however- I was riding my bike behind my car while my girl was driving it and noticed smoke from the tailpipe, but it was only a small puff durring takeoffs from stopsigns or lights, and then was nonexistant between shifts and at all for that mater, only at takeoff from a full stop, and not even every time, but often. It seems to run fine nevertheless though. Is my f22 going to die soon, or will it be ok for another 6 months to a year? Any idea's?

Judging from your description of when it does and doesn't appear to smoke, my idea is worn valve stems / guides (though it could be rings). It might just be worn stem seals, but if the seals are worn then there's a good chance the stems and guides are as well. You could try fitting new seals, but they may or may not last long if the stems move sideways in operation due to wear (it wouldn't be much sideways movement, but causes more wear on the seals).

Even just fitting new seals would be a fair bit of work, I wouldn't try to fix the problem unless it became significantly worse than it sounds to be now. Ignore it until you can't.

Might just be steam, Because there may be water sitting in the pipes and when the car jerks forward the water moves back to a hotter piece of pipe turning it into steam

Steam is very common, especially if you're doing your tests when the car is still cold.

Blue smoke would indicate oil, and johnl's diagnosis is spot-on there. That's really the only thing that would cause a puff of oil smoke at acceleration. Bad rings would result in constant smoking (I had the joy of driving a smoke-trail-leaving car for 8 hours last summer... )

Black smoke indicates a significantly rich fuel mixture. That means you aren't burning fuel properly. Modified cars tend to do this, I've noticed. Slap on an intake and an exhaust, and the next thing you know, you're blackening your bumper with exhaust soot. The puff of black smoke most often comes when under hard or moderate acceleration.

White smoke would be coolant, but can often be confused with steam. If it's coolant, it'll smell sweet. You'll know. It doesn't sound like coolant is your issue, though.

yeah, if its on start up i would have to go with steam. mine does that for a little upon start up. nothin to worry about.

                  but if it is smoke..

Coolant shouldn't puff at startup. The only thing that can really cause coolant to burn would be a blown head gasket... It's not usually a small or occasional puff.

If it's whitish, it might really be blue... oil... If that's the case, johnl is probably right.

If the cooling system is pressurised (especially hyper pressurised by say a blown head gasket), then once the engine is shut down some coolant may leak into the combustion chamber, so when you start it up after having been shut down for a while that coolant gets vapourised into steam by the hot exhaust gasses.

How much steam may be formed is largely down to how blown the head gasket may be. If it's only just starting to go then there may only be a seepage into the combustion chamber, so in normal use not enough coolant is escaping into the chamber to form noticable steam, but may after the engine is started up after having been shut off for a while...?

At any rate, Richie's problem seems to occur after a period of idling, not at start up(?), and he reckons it's smoke not steam (?).

Steam could be from condensation in cold weather as well... but that would only continue for a short time. 5 minutes of idling should evaporate any condensation in the exhaust system.

I would think a coolant leak would be constant, or just at startup due to seepage as everything cools down.

The puff at acceleration is most likely a valve-related issue, or a fuel-related issue. Fuel would be a much easier fix... but if the smoke is light in color, it may be oil burning
