Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

timing an engine that won't turn over

Hey guys, got the h23 head on, figured out the timing belt issue, and put everythign back together. I know the distributor isn't aligned right because I just slapped it on there and tightened i't down. I need a timing gun to time it to the right spot...but the car won't start. It cranks, but nothign further. I am alone right now so I can't have someone look to see if the cylinders are getting spark, so I pulled cylinder 1, and set it so i could watch it as I turned the key, and from what i could see it wasn't sparking.

Think it is primarily the distributor? If so how do i algin it enough to get the engine running?

i don't have any dtc's which is a good thing.

    Andy

Is it possible for it to be 180 degrees out of time? The igniter any good?

The lugs on the distributor are anbgled to prevent it being installed 180 degrees off.

The internals are swapped in from my old distributor which was in fine working order when i removed them.

I took out all of the wires and laid them out so i could see them and only plug 2 sparks every so often.

edit - so it is getting fuel because the fuel line to the fuel pressure regulator is soaked in fuel. I replaced the clamp and it is still loosing fuel.

          LOL @ comment.

Did you make sure the spark plugs are in correct firing order? the cap and rotor are new enough that spark is givin to the plugs.. etc... sounds like a dizzy issue. If all internals were swapped i would take a look at it again.

even if it is out of firing order it should still start just miss liek crazy.

external coil right? i switched min to internal coil and it worked fine however external should be even easier.

Yeah I'm using an h23 external dizzy. my original engine's an f22a6 external, so no funny business. I just swapped over the internals, nothing crazy.

when i did my head hasket last time i forgot the ground wire on the theremostat housing which cause my car not to get gas or spark. i would check and make sure.

Even if the distributor was all the way advanced or retarded, your engine would spark and start.

Your timing is not the issue here.

Check the inside of the distributor to make sure everything is hooked up correctly.

Also, you CAN get the distributor 180 degrees off when changing the internals if you're not paying close attention.

You know that little shaft that is held in by that clip on the rotor thingy? Well..that hole thing has to be assembled back exactly the same way you took it apart because if you install it the opposite way...then you just turned your distributor 180* off.

Either way..it should still spark with the distributor 180* off so you have other issues.

I just realized that about my distributor. No matter what, it cranks and cranks, and sometimes it will pop here and there, but nothing. It wants to start. I am getting fuel. The plugs are wet after trying to start it. The timing is accurate with the cams and crank. But it is the distributor that is all kinds of messed up. The rotor is way off.

Take the ring out and dowel out, rotate the rotor thing 180* and put it all back together and give it another try.

                        I did. Same problem.

I pulled the wires and cranked it over and none of them get spark, except for 2, and it's not a strong spark.

Now when I cranked the motor by hand I heard a deep scraping noise. So I checked it out and my starter is making all kinds of noise when I manually crank the engine over, and when I tried to start it with the key it started to smoke.

The starter doesn't prevent spark, just another problem.

                        Also I checked the compression, and cylinder 1 has 180 psi, 2 is 200, 3 is 195, and 4 is 210.

                          Try switching igniters.

I was thinking of that or the coil, but the distributor worked fine when it was in my f22a6.

Ignitions like to take shits for absolutely NO reason. It won't hurt to try replacing all the ignition components even if they previously worked.
