    h22/23 trans on a f22a6

my dads tranny on his 90 lx lost 2nd gear (auto).... therefore im going to give him the auto out of my 93 se and get a auto-->manual swap.

WOOT WOOT ... so happy about it. - my dad is going pay me for my trans!

    - is it a good idea to get a h22/23 trans for my f22 (planning on headers, bisi cam, cam gear etc....)

    - should i get a performance clutch or is it not nec. for this application.

    - would a lighter flywheel be beneficial... or would it have a neg. effect.

-should i get a lsd trans, or no

i kinda know the answers but i need to make sure, since you guys prob. know more than i do...

    thanks in advance

a h23 would be more ideal but i hope you dont plan on doing long trips because you will probably be around 3k-3500 for 65mph. (the h22 is even worse)

clutch, with the mods you suggested, a stage one clutch should be nice.

i suggest a 12-13 pound flywheel for a daily driver and you have no use for a lsd transmission unless you plan on racing the damn thing.

i do fine with my open diff, can still do posi launches.

I like the idea of a short trans being mounted to a modded f22a6...i think it would be great especially with a cam. the f series trans is a little long winded sometimes imo

Do NOT cheap out on the clutch, you will not want to go back in to replace it when you find out it is a piece of crap and doesn't not grip well. If anything go one step above what you think you'll need, serious.

If you can afford and/or find it, JDM H22 LSD (M2B4) 5spd trans. If not, an H23, USDM H22 or JDM H22 STD diff trans will do. Remember you're RPM in 5th gear, 80 mph will be 3,800 to 4000 RPM, instead of your lower F22 RPM. The louder your exhaust at these conditions, the more annoying it will be cruising, keep this in mind.

Flywheel, only do if you have money left over, if so you can go 8.5 lb - 12 lb application. I have a 12 lb on my daily driver/Red Accord and 8.5 lb on my performance street/White Accord. Honestly, I can daily drive either, it is really what suits your driving style best. The tranny upgrade on my white with the even lighter 8.5 lb flywheel was a good combo, in fact I feel it is better streetability than my Red in the city, I think mostly do to better gearing in the tranny. I suggest new flywheel screws if you replace it.

so would you suggest a lighten flywheel for someone who only has I/H/E on the F22A1? i've seen some Fidenza 11 pound flywheels as part of a Exedy OE replacement clutch on Ebay. I mean i do need to buy a flywheel anyways..

                  Good info, thanks...

So far ive found a h23 trans with 150,000km on it for $500. I do a combination of highway/city driving everyday so thats why i figured the H23 trans would be the best balance.

Im thinking of stage 1 clutch from excedy. This is all i will prob. need, since i will only be doing auto-x twice a year and besides that it will be a daily driver.

What would be the best flywheel weight for a daily driver, i want it to be a performer but i don't want it to take away from the cars streetability... i was thinking 12lbs!?!

I'm running a GReddy Evo II cat-back so it is loud... i don't want the revs to be too high for normal driving...

thanks for the info guys, its really helped out alot so far!

i wouldn't want a h23 trans with todays gas prices. a jdm h22 trans will actually cruise at lower rpms in 5th.

can this be confirmed! i was under the impression that the h23 has longer gears than the h22...

fair enough... ive asked the shop to see if they can find/get a quote on a JDM H22 M2B4. But its only going end up being 100-150 revs difference right?

the h23 is guaranteed if i want it... is that still a good option for my f22a6.

My f22a6 auto trans does about that. Im at about 2800 rpms at 65mph, and dead on 3000 rpms at 70mph.

Even with the JDM H22 tranny, you are still going to be about 4K at 80MPH.

Also, I highly recommend the LSD if you can swing it. It really adds a whole new handling dimension to the car that you just won't get without it.

As far as clutches, I agree with Cisco. You may consider a new OEM clutch as they are fairly resilient, hold up well, and will hold more power than you would think. I have seen them hold nitrous pretty well. Amounts of nitrous that would put an F22 above what you will be seeing with light mods.

If you DO decide to go aftermarket, I have had very good luck with ACT. They are not cheap, but they are good. I have a 12lb flywheel in mine, and it really isn't bad at all. Seems to be a nice blend for driving/acceleration. Of course, you can find people who are happy with 8lbers in the city too, so that is a decision you will have to make on your own.
