    Radiator Fan HELP!

    Hey Guys

I have a question about the two (2) radiator fans we have in our car.

Does the other one work intermittently?

I have just been to the mechanic to change a leaky radiator and he said that the 2nd fan was broken and he added a toggle switch inside the car so that we can just flip it on manually if ever the temperature gets too hot.

Now, heres my question: Was that the right thing to do?
I just noticed today that when I shut off the engine, the fan that blows to cool the engine even when it's off isn't blowing. Was that the fan we attached to the toggle switch? Is it not broken then?

It's cool/raining (52F) right now and I'm also wondering if the weather is helping cool the engine that the fan doesnt need to automatically turn on.

    I'm just worried.

    Thanks!

ok one is for the condensor, if you turn the ac on it will come on and the other will not if the car is cool enough. if the car is hot and you have the ac off then both will turn on. there are a few different things you can do to see why its doing that. there is a tempature switch for both the radiator fan and condensor fan. one is under the distributor and one on the thermostat. there is also a coolant gauge sensor i do believe that is the one on the block right next to the coolant tempature switch under the distributor. OHM those out and see if there working. also check your relays in the under hood fuse panel. swap one of the relays when the car is at operating tempature or until the fan that is working comes on, swap the relay and if the fan comes on there you go. get a new relay. check all your fuses as well just incase. good luck hope this helps
    Hey yo uhhhhhh fry man!!!!

      bump

let me rephrase, 1) is it normal for one of the fans to run AFTER you turn the engine off?

      2) is it normal if it doesn't?

I just don't know much abt the cb7 (or car tuning for that matter) anyway and im trying to learn. I don't wanna ruin my cb.

yes its normal. The fan will come on after the engine is off and the fan timer will kick it off after a certain amount of time. Cb7s do that, its normal.

I just went on a 333 mile drive and when I got home and shut off my engine, I can't hear the fan making a sound. Im worried about my engine. Is that something I should be worried about?

I definitely remember the fan turning on after I shut off the engine. But that was before my mechanic wired the fan to a toggle switch in my dash.

It will only come on after you turn your car off if the temperature sensor tells it to. So, cool days make it likely that you won't ever hear it come on, whereas warm days you probably will. Mine almost never comes on in the winter (most days around 50), but can come on a lot in the summer (it gets to 110-115 here).

As for the toggle switch, you need to figure out which fan it is wired to. Turn it on and look at the fans in the engine bay. Really, it's kinda crappy your mechanic wired in a toggle switch. It's just avoiding a larger problem (fixing the actual temp switch, or fixing the fan if the motor is bad). If it is wired to the AC fan, then you need to verify that your cooling fan (driver's side fan) is coming on.

To check the Cooling Fan, you just turn your car on and let it sit and idle for 15-20 minutes, and it should kick on. If it doesn't, then you can unplug the sensor and jump the wires at the plug. If the fan comes on, you have a bad sensor. If it doesn't come on, then you might have a bad fan motor or a bad relay. You can unplug the fan and run a wire from the fan plug to the positive terminal on the battery, and ground the other terminal. If the fan comes on, then you have a bad relay (replace it). If it doesn't come on, then you probably have a bad fan motor (replace it).

If the toggle switch is wired to the AC fan (passenger's side), then you just have to remember to turn it on when your AC is on, or go through the same process, and make sure that the sensor works, the relay works, the fan works, etc.

Good luck, and feel free to ask questions.

Ok, so I figured out that the toggle switch is connected to the cooling fan. It works if I turn it on, so I guess I have a bad sensor?

I did what you said to let it run for 15-20 minutes. Fan never came on.

And also, if I leave the fan running while the engine is on, would that drain the battery?

                    Thanks!

You either have a bad switch or a bad relay. You'd have to go through with a test light to check and see if you have power.

When the engine is on, the car is running off of the alternator, not the battery. The only exception to that is if your alternator is too weak to provide enough power.

When the engine is off, the fan powers on if I flip the toggle. Does that mean anything in particular?

the fan will only stay on if it needs to to prevent engine damage from getting too hot....if its cool enough the fan will turn off when the car turns off

It means that your toggle switch is wired to the fan. Nothing else. You still probably have a bad switch or relay that would need to be fixed to get it to work in the stock manner. Since the mechanic wired that toggle switch in, you'd have to undo that before you could really track down the issue.
