    Transmission Mystery

A bolt on my transmission managed to unthread itself. I only noticed because my car starting to make a grinding sound, which is probably due to the transmission fluid that leaked all over the bottom of my car. Oddly enough I never saw a puddle of fluid in the drive way at home or work. I did change the trasmission fluid a couple months ago, but it is not one of the bolts you loosen. This bold can only be seen by looking towards the passanger side from the drivers side. When I got underneath to inspect it came right out without any unthreading. It also had this gray this fluid all over it.(See Picture) Any ideas why this would happen?

maybe it just came loose over time. But if its not one of the main bolts that hold the tranny to the block then it looks like it could just be a bolt that holds the rear motor mount bracket to the block.

Looks like it holds the casing together....

        Wow...

The quick answer is that if the bolt came out w/out use of a wrench, then it probably was not tightened to specifications...

If you are absolutely certain that you never touched it, then there has to be some other explanation. No matter how tempting it may be to believe, no bolt on any car SHOULD free itself.

I imagine anything is possible as always, but have you been able to put it back? Try to get yourself a Factory Service Manual or a Chilton's.

I bought a Haynes myself, but there are always inconsistencies so I don't really recommend it if you are serious about having the correct information on the first try.

That is one of the housing bolts.

            Transmission Grinding

So I got the bolt back on and was going to change the transmission fluid when my gorilla key broke, so now I'm waiting for a new one so i can get the passager side wheel off. I drove the car again and it still makes a horrible grinding noise in first gear, however it reverses fine without any noise? Is that normal? Will it normal grind with just a little transmission fluid?

Yes, it will grind with a low fluid level. It'll also overheat very quickly if you drive it that way.

Thank you. I'm just hoping that when I fill it up that it doesn't continue to grind.

                  Still Grinding

Filled it back up with tranny fluid and its still grinding. When I drained the old fluid the majority of it came out The noise is coming from the passenger side of the car, and ideas?

The passenger side is where the tranny is. Makes sense.

If it was grinding before, damage may have been done. If it was driven with low fluid and allowed to overheat, damage was certainly done.

What fluid are you using? Honda MTF or GM Synchromesh (Pennzoil Synchromesh is about the same thing) are the best choices.

                      Ouch

I think that may be the case. It was nearly impossible to get the filler bolt off, and I had to use an impact wrench to finally do it. When I inspected the bolt I noticed the washer had been fused to the filler bolt! I just don't understand how it could overheat the majority of the tranny fluid was still there.
