    newbie EGR cleaning

So I finally got those soft ass ackward 12mm bolts off.

Unplugged elect. connection and the other line, got the EGR unit in my garage. Sprayed it out with throttle body cleaner and it was NASTYYYYYY lol

Next question, would it hurt to spray some carb cleaner down that hole in the car that the EGR sits ontop of? Appears to be full of carbon also.

Any other tips? I just sprayed EGR down and tons of carbon came out.

Drilling out the ports and cleaning those is NEXT WEEKEND!

So its ok to spray carb cleaner INTO that giant hole INSIDE the car that the EGR sits ontop of?

I wasn't sure, b/c obviously Im spraying it DOWN into it, and have no way of getting ti back out nor the carbon it loosens up.

Any future plans for upgrading the intake manifold? Reason I ask is, you can do an okay-decent job cleaning it while it's on the motor but you could do a really good job w/ another IM (lets say an H23 IM for ex.) and then bolt it on to replace your stock one. That way, you've done a full clean-out on the IM and done a nice perf. upgrade, all at the same time.

I don't think it would hurt spraying carb cleaner in there, try not to go crazy

but I used a vacuum cleaner attachment and a paperclip

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

No i have no plans of upgrading manifold.

Car is stock, and will remain stock, it is my daily beater.

But now that I've said that, I'll probably mod it later lol.

I sprayed massive amounts of carb cleaner into the hole where the egr connects. I had TONS of stuttering and bogging down when I started it after cleaning it. After 5 min of idling, it finally went away and and I took it for a drive.

HOLY SHIT night and day difference, car runs like the first time I bought it at 110K miles 10 years ago. I had stuttering in first gear at 1500-1800rpms, ITS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woo hoo No more hesistation in first gear.

No shit, the car runs smoother smooth now.

^Yeah, j/w about the future plans but great work though! Having a clog in the system will def. cause hesitation at around 1800, part throttle. I made a block plate about 3 yrs ago to diagnose the problem, completely went away and left the EGR blocked off

No not just seafoaming the car.

You need to remove the EGR and clean it by hand. There is no way in hell seafoam could clean the EGR like it needs to be cleaned to operate properly. Mine was CAKED, I had to push the valve hard by hand to get it move up, after cleaning, it moves like it should.

i like that idea of a paper clip and a vacuum. I might try that tomorrow. Did you guys get a new EGR gasket when you put it back on?

Anyone ever think about using a long pipe cleaner with seafoam or carb cleaner to push down in the egr ports....

i used a new gasket from autozone, it was a felpro and cost 99cents

i didnt see one when i took the egr off, i can only assume it melted away into dust over 19 years.

i think this is the best maintence cleaning i ve ever done to my car. she purrrs so good now. just realize it will bogg and stutter if u spray carb cleaner into the egr hole on the car at first start up. kinda scared me at first lol

i dislike egr port servicing because the debris from the cleaning and drilling might get inside the motor which is no bueno.
