How bad for a cb7 is the idle surge?

Is the idle surge we're all plagued with really that bad? Apart from being irritating. If you drive a 5spd is there any real reason to get rid of it. I'm asking this because I'm not going to bother tracking it down if there's no negative mechanical effect on the car.

well theres an increase in fuel consumption with all the revving.
unwanted attention from people next to you who think you want to race them.

My engine mount bushings got torn apart because of the idle surging in my car, btw.

not every one is plagued with it. mine started doing it on the way home from work. Whipped into a parking lot and fixed it right ther. why dont you just fix it? ther is plenty of threads on this.

It's a lot of work to track it down. I'm trying to find out if it's really worth the work to do. I haven't heard of any negative effects to it, besides the fact that it's irritating.

I've tightend down the FITV cleaned the EGR and looked for a vacuum leak. It still surges. I've only got a short ram intake.

i tryed fixing this today...and plenty of other days and it wass a no go. i cleaned both egr's i tightened the white plastic screw on the icv... burped the coolant to get air out...still does it. i cant figure out what it is

Besides the before mentioned slight increase in fuel consumption, I cant think of any negative affects of the surge.


Could this surge also be the result of a hole in the exhaust downpipe? I have a hole the size of a quarter in my downpipe and I now have a surge, never did before. The exhuast finally rusted through and now along with the added noise I have a surge.

it's not bad for it. but it shouldn't surge that much if the intake manifold is clean, maybe a couple of times an hour (if you drive in stop and go traffic for a whole hour)

Mine never surges. Ever. Spray soapy water around everywhere and see if it bubbles....you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere man.
