ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

    grinding

Why does my 5th gear grind? Do I need a new tranny? No other gears grind just 5th.

Probably synchros going bad into fifth gear.

You can replace tranny fluid to preserve the tranny. Just be gentle going into fifth and try to match the revs when you put it in. Depends on how bad the grinding is but you maybe be able to shift with out it grinding if you do it right.

You don't NEED a new transmission.

Which tranny do you have? The 5th gear grinds can be common on some of the Prelude trannies.

Have you checked your tranny fluid? When was the last time it was changed? If you can't remember/don't know then you should probably just do it. There is a thread around here debating the best oil to use; Honda says use regular motor oil, some people are going for GM Syncromesh, etc. If you go with regular oil, I'd go for at the very least 10W30. 5W30 is a little too thin IMO.

Also, how is your clutch? As you get to the end of it's lifespan, it gets slightly tougher to shift.

GM Synchromesh or Honda MTF (synthetic) are the best options, especially for a tranny that is already failing. The fluid change won't fix anything permanently but it may prolong the life of the tranny. 5th gear isnt too bad. I had 2nd and 3rd go on me in the past. Just don't shift fast into 5th. mine grinds now. no biggie.

Mine is doing the same thing. It's original '93 with 230,000 miles on it. The only way I can keep it from grinding is to hold the clutch longer, and slowly move the shifter into 5th. I put a new clutch in, and changed the oil not long ago. Waiting to save some cash to completely rebuild it with new bearings, syncronizers, and probably even the shifter forks. Looking at LSD kits too. Alot of the money comes in the different thicknesses of shim washers you have to buy to get the clearances right, rather than putting it together, measuring it out, then having to stop and go order the sizes you need to put it back together right.
My inferiority complex isn't as good as yours.

not to jack the thread but if it this grinding keeps happening will it result in some sort internal damages to the tranny?

I agree that it could just be bad/low trans fluid.

And yes, grinding is typically indicative of metal parts smashing and wearnig together, so that would end up causing damage and problems.

Maybe something is blocking the shifter to fully engage into the 5th gear position.
