ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

    EGR Question

So I've been having a lot of trouble with my car lately. Between 1000 and 3000 it cut's out quite often and it's starting to be unsafe to drive.

I've cleaned or replaced every sensor on the IM except the EGR. Instead I capped off the vacuum line and disconnected the electrical sensor. I did not clean the EGR or the ports but it is not functioning. Even tho it is non functional would I still benefit from cleaning the ports.

What I'm trying to ask is, even tho it's disconnected could it still be causing a problem?

Here is what I've done so far:
    Cleaned Intake/Filter
    Replaced IACv
    Replaced Air starter valve
    Cleaned FITv
    Cleaned TB
    Cleaned spark plugs/wires

I have an extra o2 sensor, and an ecu so I might try those. I'll also do the fuel filter and some injector cleaner.

Could the EGR still be causing a problem?

yeah i would either take it off and clean or just replace it all together. I having trouble with my car right now where it hesitates when i try to accelerate and its cutting out and im pretty sure its the EGR valve. try cleaning it first and if that dont work you might have to replace it.

Thanks. I have one to replace it with but those bolts are just stripped. I'll have to see if I can get my grinder in there.. It's also a weird angle for the wrench so I can't get full torque on it.

yeah i had the same issue with the angle as it is tight to get in there just to loosen up the bolts, i cleaned my egr not too long ago because my car was idling and that fixed it

yeamans and I put the h23 manifold in today and so far so good. I may have to adjust the tps a bit more bute other than that no problems at that rpm anymore.

I have a block off plate!!!! I looked for an hour today when yeamans was here and I couldn't find it! Once I do it'll come right off tho, I put ant-seize on the bolts haha.

Fuckin EGR's... the car is fine now.

how dramatic was the car cutting out at low rpms?

I capped off the egr on my car and now when at low rpms or even at idle, the engine will die for a second, like thirty times lol. Just hoping yours was that problem so it'll be an easy fix.

                ^^click it or ticket^^

I think the most common issue would be the EGR. So far I'm good. I have some high idle times but that's just my ecu adjusting and the TPS needing to be moved a little.

I drove it pretty far so if it was something else I think I would've known it. It's still a good idea to clean all the other valves and do the regular maintenance.

So we swapped the entire h23 IM on and that thing was spotless clean, EGR and all and I still have the problem.

Next is the o2 sensor. Then the fuel filter. Then I'm just going to blow the car up.

I'm not understanding what effect a faulty EGR system would have on engine operation. All it does is add a small amount of exhaust gas to the combustion chamber in order to cool the combustion a bit in order to prevent the formation of oxides of nitrogen. Only during a emission test would this even show up. The engine doesn't care one way or another. The O2 sensor is a different story.

thats what i was thinking. i can t see an egr causing the car to "cut off"

^^^^ me trying to kill myself after i saw the gas prices.

are you throwing any codes? the ecu can tell when you are running rich or lean and will throw a code for fuel supply i think its code 43. codes 1 and 41 for the o2 sensor. and like someone siad the egr is for recirculation of exhaust.

I would be almost willing to bet it happens on WOT or close to it no?

if so i would be willing to bet you have a timing issue, either the dist or the plugs/wires. check for spark at the wires. on all 4. try retarding you timing from the dist. then check for a change.

Im a little unsure what your saying is wrong with your car... your saying it cuts off meaning it stalls? or are you saying it hesitates upon acceleration?

Well it wasn't the EGR because the problem persists. I swapped a thoroughly cleaned H23 IM onto the car and I still have the same problem. I tried to put my other o2 sensor in it but it is stuck in the stock exhaust manifold, I'm guessing it's been there all 190k miles so it's not coming out. As of right now my guess is the o2 sensor.

                              Correct

I'm not throwing any codes, so it's a little tricky to figure out the problem. Surprising it doesn't happen at WOT. it happens when I am just slightly accelerating after 1000rpm and before 3000rpm is when it will happen if it does. When it happens the gas pedal has no effect on the engine, I can push it all the way in or let it out and nothing changes. I hear a knocking noise coming from underneath the car, it sounds like where the down pipe is. The engine does not shut off it just sounds starved, just as an engine sounds when it doesn't get enough fuel or enough air. And of course my exhaust amplifies the sound of everything and it sounds like a whole bunch of mini backfires.

It is when I accelerate slightly between 1000 and 3000.
