ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    High compression?

I just did a compression test on my '93 LX 5speed w/ 285k miles. The car seems to run just fine, never giving me any issue to speak of; I ran the test out of curiosity.

    Results are as follows:
    195 - 190 - 190 - 190 -

This is surprising, as I would have expected much lower results for a car that has such high mileage (relatively speaking!). I've heard that carbon buildup can cause this.
Do I need to be concerned about this? Chances are, the car has been like this for a while. I just drove 700 miles a few days ago and performance was fine. I'm looking for this car to last me through almost through grad school, so another 4 years or so. If the high compression is indicative of some failure, I'd like to know about it. Thanks

those are good numbers. drive that thing man!

now with the mileage, do you know when a water pump & timing belt were installed last?

I thought the service limit was 175PSI, hence my concern. Timing belt, water pump, and all accessory belts were changed about 15,000 miles ago. This car has been really well maintained by it's previous owners, both mechanical engineers who did all their own work.

carbon build up can cause higher compression.

ok I looked and that is a little high. I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. Also if the test was done while the engine was cold and not at operating temp then the numbers will be a little higher than actual.

but the numbers are consistent which is what you are looking for. each tester is different.

Yep. Consistency is what you're looking for. Personally, I aim for less than 5% difference between any cylinder.

ANd yes, different testers will test differently.

The service limit being rated @ 175psi is probably for regular gas.
Compression is good. You just have to have the appropriate gas to handle it. Use premium gas if you're paranoid. But the extra compression is just free HP. lol.
