ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Questions about engines

How far can you go with a Honda engine?
Or rather... how many miles can you put on a F or H series engine before it needs to be re-built, assuming all basic maintenance* was done?

    *oil, fluid, grease, ect

    And...

whats the transmission from the F or H series capable of in terms of mileage before it breaks down? Again, assuming all basic maintenance was done.

    And a project related question:

I have an engine that has about 180K miles on it (burns oil up the wazu, and to top it off, its a 3 cylinder wonder) and I was wondering whats the absolute max that it can go?

I'm actually in the middle of doing a swap from the F22a4 (old smokie, I'll call it) to a newer F22a6, from a '93. The newer A6 has about 10K more miles on the engine, but it is in much better shape then the one that is currently in my car. (at least til tonight, when I actually pull it) Is it worth it for me to rebuild the engine myself when the a6 does finally go?

I have many more questions... but I'll save em for later.

It is really up to you if you want to rebuild it. The engines are the same on the inside except a very small amount of differences such as cam, etc. I would use the smokey as core for getting parts for your A6 such as sending in the a4 head/cam/etc into to be worked on, polished, valve job etc and retain your running car with the A6 until you do a headswap, etc. Or you can go forged/sleeved in the A4 and build a monster stand motor and cram it in once it is done. Retain your A4 exhaust manifold as it flows better with the A6 but be sure to use the A6 ECU as it has a tiny bit of a better tune (-+ 5HP with cam and ecu on stock A6 eng vs A4). The engines are the same from what I have read in exception to cam and ECU, oh and the IAC or "blackbox" correct me if I am wrong.

A normal conservative driver who doesn't normally go past 3500 rpms and usually keeps it well below 3000 rpms can get 500K or more miles from the engine without touching anything regular oil changes and maintenance. In my case, mine is at 210K miles and doesn't burn any oil or coolant. Due to a combination of engineering, maintenance, and luck.

The more power you coax out of the engine and the higher the rpms you use on a regular basis, the quicker you wear the engine. So it depends what your goal is. I fyou want max power out of the engine, you pay for it in lifetime. Also if you mod the engine for more power you are at increased risk for broken engine components if they are not matched well. But that's part of running a modified engine, it's for speed not for lifetime.

That's a general answer, I'm totally new to the engine modification game. Others may have more specific answers.

As to transmission, I have a 5 speed 92 dx with 210K miles. It is on the original clutch. And the original transmission. All the factors outlined for the engine apply to the transmission: the harder you work it, the quicker it goes. But I would guess the manual tranny will go the full 500K miles with conservative driving. The clutch could go 250-300K or more without being changed is my guess, if making it last a long time is a priority for you and you treat it with respect. But not if someone uses it hard or don't even understand what wears a clutch.

Auto trannies will not go as long as the manual ones so I can't speak to that.

I have a 90 lx auto trannie with 280K and it's junk. i dont know how the previous owner drove it; i just got it a couple months ago with a crappy trannie, but 280K seems like a good life on the trannie. maybe im wrong.

Automatics are rarely maintained properly... fluid changes and proper fluid are a MUST. Maintained properly, they will last a very long time.

The engines, if maintained and not abused, will go for a very long time as well.

I'm expecting to get over half a million miles on my L15A in the next 5 years.

where were you when I posted a different question? haha
Actually, I probably SHOULD have done a search, but when I tried to search for a few things, I got blanks.... so either its me, or its not there... ah well.

I've got the engine out of the bay, and I do appreciate all the answers Hopefully I can take care of the newer engine better then the previous owner of the car took care of the old one! The thing smoked, leaked power steering fluid when I got it, and on top of that, it had a weird electrical problem. I think it'll make a good place to get spare parts, anyways.

I suppose I should have stated that I have an automatic trans... but I got both answers anyways I guess if I take care of the thing, I'll be sure to get some good life out of it. hopefully I'll be able to get some decent power with the a6 on the a4 Tranny... anyways, thanks!

Let me guess, no reverse, 4th gear locks up the axles and kills the engine, general crappiness. I have a 268K auto trans and it is bad aswell.

The automatic transmissions themselves usually last a pretty long time mechanically. What happens is the TCM goes bad, and can cause a number of different problems. I've found that its usually the cause of people complaining about auto tranny problems...essentially an electrical issue.
