ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    oil leak question

ok my mechanic said i was leaking oil on my timeing belt from my cams er something.. is that even possable????if it is whattt seal am i going to have to replace to stop that.

Worn 'oil seal'. Oil leaks past the front camshaft oil seal, then onto the inside of the cam sprocket, then from there is spun out onto the belt. You need to replace the oil seal, and it would be advisable to replace the belt too since oil will attack the rubber.
    Regards from Oz,
    John.

stock motor? or h22? most likely, its your cam seal thats leaking. if you havent done your t-belt, you should do the whole package while your at it, if you plan on keeping your car for a long time. by whole package, i mean, timing belt, balancer belt, cam seal(s), crank seal, balancer seal, water pump, drive belts and install a balancer seal retainer if it doenst already have one..those balancer seals are notorious for backing out and leaking...certain 94 and up accords actually had a factory recall back in the days for the balancer seal..and the accord motors are pretty much the same from 90+up...same concept/design, w/ slight changes here and there..

off the top of my head,
$300-500, more on the $500 side.

          water pump=$60 new (Honda)
timing and bal. shafts belt $80 for the two
new timing belt tensioner HOnda $105 (I kid you not!). Aftermarket is less.
          camshaft seal $5.00
          2 balance shaft seals 4.00
crankshaft front main seal ??? $15
new valve cover gasket $20 (I've started using THE RIGHT STUFF instead of this item--works great at 1/10 the cost and is easier to apply)
2 hrs labor @80 per hour for normal t.b. job
1 hr extra for the extras $80

          =$540

That's why I did this work myself--majoro dinero. But I also could afford to have the car off the road while I did it. And I didn't do any of the seals in the end because there was no visible leaking when I went in.

          Good luck.

the wisdom of doing all of it is primarily that you (or your mechanic) don't have to go in again to fix another failure.

If you're doing the work yourself I would consider just replacing the stuff that needs replacing. Like: the leaking seal. A new timing belt because the old one is soaked. Cheap out and don't put a new timing belt tensioner in (if grease is not spewing from the bearing and it feels tight and smooth) and just be aware that if it starts to go and you start hearing timing belt noise you have to change it immediately--like pull over on the side of the road immediately. New Valve cover gasket for reassembly (Or do what I did and use The Right Stuff instead of a standard valve cover gasket--1 can for $10 and it will do the valve cover gasket like 8 times and it's more foolproof) And that's it. Total cost: $100 and one afternoon of your time.

If you have to go in again, you have to go in again. But the 2nd time will be much faster because you'll know what you are doing. Of course if you're paying a mechanic to go in again it costs 2 hours of labor each time--although a real pro who does this job a lot can probably do it in 1 hour (just the timing belt, not the seals or water pump).

Incidentally, I was recently considering buying an 87 corolla and called up a good mechanic for a ballpark figure on a timing belt for that and all the seals and water pump, and he quoted me $500 so I don't think this estimate is far off.

It could be one of balance shaft seals or, more likely, the camshaft seal, which I've heard doesn't tend to leak a lot when it leaks. Or if you scratched the bore by accident when you replaced the crankshaft seal it could be leaking from there--hope not.

It could also just be your oil pan gasket.
