    ported head gains

hey guys, I have an f22a6 and im lookin to build it. I already have an intake, header, and exhaust. i wanna port the head on it but i wanna get sum input from others that have done this already first. pretty much my question is what kinda gains am i lookin at? and how much should I take off of each side? Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

your gains depend on how through you are and the quality of the port and potential polish

Head porting depends on the skill of the porter. The exhaust ports are pretty restrictive, so opening that up a little can result in fairly significant gains... but it's really not possible to say exactly how much (by the time you get to that point, everything else done to your engine influences it)

I REALLY don't suggest attempting to port the head yourself, if you don't know what you're doing (and since you're asking this question... I figure it's safe to assume that you don't know what you're doing!)

i definitely dont but i know a guy who does and hes gonna do it pretty cheap. i just wanna know if it would be a waste of my time pulling the head off.

If everything else is stock, it wouldn't necessarily get much of a gain... but once you add an intake, exhaust, cam, and a good header... it'll be noticeable. Raise the compression and tune the ECU and you'll see even more significant of a gain.

However, if the guy doesn't have a flow bench, and he's not experienced with the F22A... cheap may not be the best option. Many porters just hog out the ports, thinking bigger is better... and then end up destroying your low-end power, and not giving a real gain up top.

yea ive got a buddy with a flow bench, he work for a shop and records before and after results. usualy its like 10-15 cui or whatever it was called, or more flow for a basic port.

thats why i was wondering how big to port them. i have a ractive intake, megan header, and full exhaust. I just dont have a cam yet. im sure he isnt familiar with the f22 since there arent many people where i live building them. do you suggest a partial port, or just waiting to find someone familiar with the f22?

I would find someone familiar with the F22, personally.

I'll have to find the thread, but there's a shop that's offering port work for a very reasonable price. I think HondaFan81 made the thread in the performance section... That shop knows the F22 well.

Also, that Megan header isn't going to do much for you, unfortunately.

thanx man ill check it out. I didnt really expect the header to do much but i got it for free so i couldnt argue with that lol. im just trying to get all i can get out of the f22. I dont wanna jump to the h22 until i know what my f is capable of.

I definitely suggest going with someone that is familiar with the ports of the F22 head.

Flow numbers do not mean much, What i mean by this is a head can flow 350cfm but at the price of diminished velocity which happens when too much is hogged out of a port. Knowing and understanding the port geometry of a head is where people make maximum gains from a port and polish.

I personally went with the bisimoto/portflow head just because bisi has done all the reasearh on the head already and supplied a CNC program to portflow that is specific to the head. after machining it is followed up with hand finishing. The reason i liked this is because no hand can ever be as acurate as a CNC machine especially when it comes to repeatability across all of the ports on the head.

I think they do, yes. I don't know how experienced with the F22A they are, though. ESP generally does good work, though.
