ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Swapping a Transmission

Hey guys i figured i should just post up and ask here, i have a h22 swapped in with a h23 tranny, (i didnt do the swap) and the tranny right now grinds, so i got a new h23 tranny but i dont wanna pay a mech to do it for me and im trying to learn how to get into this anyway, i tried searching the forums but i couldnt find anything that was that detailed. the h23 tranny i bought is already tapped for the accord mounts. Can someone give me a detailed guide on how to swap the trannies out preferably without dropping the engine out? And i wanted to do the clutch and flywheel out of the current transmission into that new one too.

The clutch and flywheel will be attached to the engine. Just leave them in place.

Your best bet is to get a manual (there are some that you can download at the top of this section). It would be quite involved for someone to type out all that needs to be done.

Essentially, you need to drain your transmission.
remove the axles (both axle nuts, and separate both lower ball joints... this can be tricky. if you tear a boot, it's best to just replace the ball joint... separate an axle, replace the axle)
Remove the intermediate shaft on the back of the engine.
Unbolt your clutch slave cylinder and move it out of the way. Don't detach the lines, or you'll have to re-bleed the system.
      Remove your starter.
Remove your distributor (carefully mark where it was, or be ready with a timing light to adjust the timing when you put it back)
Remove your front crossmember and radius rods.
      Remove your battery and intake.
Support the engine from underneath with a padded jack
Lower the engine about an inch by the driver's side mount (this is necessary to get the transmission to clear the fenderwell)
      Remove the transmission mount
      Disconnect your VSS
Unbolt the transmission (while having someone support it, to be safe)
Keep track of all bolts you remove... you will need to know what goes where. They're not all the same.
Carefully remove the transmission. It's heavy, and awkward. All the weight is on the outside.
Position the new transmission, and work it into place. If the splines don't line up right away (they never have for me), you'll need someone to very slightly turn the crank via the crank pulley while you slide it into place.
Get it into place, get one bolt in there to ensure it's on... then begin re-installing everything you removed.

That is in no particular order, and I may have missed some things... but that's generally how you do it. Get a manual for diagrams and more details.

before i would have just skimmed through that and called a pro to do it but since i did it, now it all makes sense.

A transmission jack would help you.

That is very true. If you're not lucky enough to get the transmission back on quickly, it can be difficult. I've had fairly strong friends helping me in the past, and even with them doing the heavy lifting (basically benchpressing that awkward thing), it can be difficult. Once the person lifting gets tired, it's a pain in the ass. I've never used a transmission jack, but that would've come in handy!
