I have a 91 lx that is parked because it pours blue smoke. I'm looking into turboing and came up with two options. I either want to get a h22 or a f22b. They're both DOHC, but I wasn't sure if vtec or non vtec would be better for a turbo. What do you experienced tuners think?

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

F22B has lower compression, cast iron cylinder walls, and easy ready for boost.
H22A has higher compression, FRM cylinder walls, can't really handle too much boost and stock internals but has been done before.
The F22B is better for a beginner boost build, but it is your build so it's what you want to do.
EDIT: I forgot about your vtec question and that is going to be different no matter who you ask some prefer with and some prefer without it just depends on your build plans.Last edited by Chico Suave; 05-12-2010, 07:54 PM.Originally posted by 92jdmif you have any mechanical inclination, it should be easier than a drunk highschool girl after prom.

The main reason I even considered the f22 was because I kept seeing people talk about how you'll lose vtec and it can mess with your turbo. If it really is just bull then I'll probably go ahead with the h because it's a better motor even if it takes a little more work.Originally posted by Nyne521 View Posti'd go h22... alot of people say you lose v tec when you turbo but they are retarded... lol... i mean f22 is a better base setup for turbo... all f series are with the exception of a f20b... but the f22b head flows like crap and the h22 is just a better motor all around

It's not bull, people have had to lock in vtec because of how extreme their build is. People also just don't want to deal with the tunning aspect of having vtec. Also so you know but would not recommend it for a beginner build is using a F22/23 block with a H22 head some call it G22/23 swap. It is a time consuming build (my buddy is currently working on) and has run great, for experienced builders.
I really recommend that you look deeply into all these possible motors and see what fits your budget and meets your performance needs/wants (but that's never ending
). Is your car going to be your daily driver/weekend track car or a full race car?

You won't "lose vtec"... turbo has nothing to do with the function of vtec. It's just one more thing to take into consideration when tuning, since the VTEC crossover introduces a different cam profile.
Also, the FRM sleeves of the H22 are strong, light, and have fantastic heat dissipation properties. They are NOT inferior sleeves. They just aren't compatible with most traditional forged pistons.
The F22A is honestly the best option. You already have it. It's cheap to replace if you damage it. There are plenty of options for stronger internals. The F22A head outflows any other F and H series head out there when modified properly. If you want boost, don't waste your money on a new engine. Put the money into building the one you have properly.

I have a 89 Toyota Pick-up with a 22RE in it as my dd. My accord is just gonna be a toy. I want to make it a full race car, but that will take a while and a lot of $$.Originally posted by Chico Suave View PostIt's not bull, people have had to lock in vtec because of how extreme their build is. I thought about doing that, but really want a dohc. Since my car blows so much smoke I guess I'll look at my internals and make sure nothings fubar before I decide.Originally posted by deevergote View PostYou won't "lose vtec"... turbo has nothing to do with the function of vtec. How many miles are on the engine? Probably time for a rebuild. If you decide to stay with your engine just rebuild the entire engine since you have a DD and just throw in the aftermarket goodies with maybe a PnP while you are in there put it all back together with the turbo, don't forget the tune and have some fun.
Wish you the best of luck

That's really about it. Look into good internals, stronger sleeves if you want a lot of boost (Darton and Golden Eagle are good brands to go with there), some good headwork, a proper cam (Bisimoto is the F22A expert), and a good tuning setup (if you can't tune yourself, find a shop with a dyno that can, and see what they prefer to use).Originally posted by Chico Suave View PostHow many miles are on the engine? Then be sure to research turbo components. Don't get a turbo that's too small, or you can do some damage. Small turbos make heat.
