    Alternator light question

I have a 92 lx F22A1 auto. The alternator light is coming on intermittingly. I have taken it to Advance Auto Parts and Oreily's to have the battery and alternator checked. Both checked fine. This seems to be happening at lower rpm or idle and when there lights and A/C and elec. things running. It will come on and i can turn off lights and stuff and speed up rpms and it usually goes off. Can something be causing feedback or ??? Any ideas or help would be apprec.

check and see if your lights are starting to pulse while you accelerate and decelerate, mean if you give it gas do they get brighter, you should check all grounds for good contact, and if that doesnt work, i would just replace the alt. like you said this is a intermittent problem, it could have been working when you got it tested.

Checking the grounds is definitely the first thing you should do. Make sure all grounds and battery connections are clean and tight.

It's also possible that the testing equipment wasn't accurate... or the people operating it weren't that bright. You don't need a PhD to work at O'Reilly's!

Try taking it somewhere else to have the alternator tested. If it's not a ground issue, it's most likely a faulty alternator.

Thanks for saying what year, model, and transmission you have. Even though none of that is really necessary for this thread, I wish everyone would do that! So often those things actually make a difference in what the solution might be, and it's like pulling teeth to get that info from people!

the alternator belt is driven by the crank pulley. The crank pulley is in two pieces connected by rubber.

My buddies 91 accord had the rubber slowly falling out and when the a/c kicked on the alternator light came on for a second as the rubber slipped and the belt did not turn. He had around 200k on the engine and this was back in 04 or 05.

This is another possibility...check grounds first though.

Okay I did some checking today while the light was on with the A/C running and it shows 14.2 volts at the battery. Just to eliminate it, today i will clean the posts real good and treat them. It seems to be something along those lines or some type of ground issue as deevergote stated.

I did some more checking. I cleaned the battery posts and treated. There was a small bit of corrsion on the ground. Its still doing the same thing. Maybe not quiet as much. Next i will check the ground cable where it grounds on the engine block.

harmonic balancer, it is the pulley attached to you crank. it has a rubber bushing so you need to replace the pulley. the pulley is two circles connected by rubber

i would check belts and everything then take it back to advance auto and have it retested agian. i work there myself , have him test it twice, sometimes the testers give a faulty reading, tell him to do a battery test alone, and then a system test

I have checked everything 2 or 3 times. It shows charging. I checked 2 different places and at home with the voltmeter. It is still coming on but i am going to keep driving it til something breaks. then i can figure it out. It seems to be the alternator though.

I know this was kind of a old thread, but i thought i would post in case anyone else has this issue. It was the alternator that caused the issue. Old Honda tek was correct. I put a used alternator on it from a parts car and it fixed it.
