ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    2.6-2.8 quarts on oil drain???

So I generally don't post alot of questions but this will be my first post next to the one I made in the image gallery. I found most of what i needed through the search function which you guys are pretty good with the diys and stickies by the way.

Anyway I just got my CB7 last Friday and during my test drive and talking to the guy that was selling it, he did mention that it was in need of an oil change. So today when I changed the oil, I did note it was blacker than I've seen before and slightly thicker than usual. Of course I drained the oil filter as well and let it drain for a good 15 minutes before reinstalling the drain bolt. It was just kind of concerning to see only 2.6-2.8 quarts in my waste container. I recall reading that the F22A1 engine may burn oil? This one has about 120k on the clock and I'm not 100% sure of the maintenance history besides a brake job last year and a radiator replacement back in 2003 at 51k miles.

With that said I may try to run the Auto-Rx treatment on my next oil change because I also noted that there was some build up on the underside of the oil filler cap and my makeshift funnel when I took it out of the filler. I did fill it with 5w30 Mobil 1 Truck/SUV oil that I had leftover from changing the oil on my 4runner. The only difference I recall is that this has the zinc additive that was removed from most oils a while back. I also noted less engine shake at idle after the oil change. I was just hoping for some feedback on this. I do realize its a 17 year old car but I figure that maybe with some good maintenance maybe I can help bring the engine back into good running condition for daily driving?

If the oil was black, thick, low, and had deposits on the filler cap... then chances are it was WAY overdue for a change. Sounds like the guy you bought the car from abused it.

I'm not a big fan of additives, though I do know that the Zinc additive that most oils do not have (I believe Torco oils have it) is good.

The F22A shouldn't burn oil unless the valve seals or piston rings are failing. It's old, so oil consumption is fairly common... but it is not a part of the design.

Keep an eye on oil levels, look for evidence of burning (blue smoke), or leaking. It's very possible that if there's that much gunky buildup, that there may be leaks that are plugged at the moment, that may be noticeable as you clean things up.
Also, any time a radiator is replaced, I'm always concerned that the car may have been allowed to overheat. If that happened, you could be looking at head gasket issues (coolant in the oil... could have created gunk), and potentially a warped head.

If you really want to make something of this car, it might be a smart idea to consider another engine.

Well I know it belonged to a girl before (don't mean anything by that). The radiator was replaced by the owner before that, I was going through the paper work in the glovebox and the services included the radiator, a/c servicing, and tune up going over the course of the 2003 year. Thankfully I didn't notice blue smoke indicating burning or any foaming or milk like texture in the oil to indicate presence of coolant.

There may be an engine swap in the future but I have to make this engine work for at least a year before I consider that. The build up in the engine was a little disconcerning...hopefully it'll hold up for a year.
