ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Tie rod end boot

My tie rod boot on the passenger side is torn, but the tie rod is still good. Will this make a squeaking sound? Also can I change out the boot and cotter pin without getting an alignment?

You will need anlignment on that since it's handles the steering position. The tie rods will not make a squeaking sound , they'll make a tapping sound when they're going out.

Dont replace just the boot, do the complete outer tie rod. It shouldnt cost any more then 25 bucks for a half decent one. Around 50 for a MOOG/TRW which is Lifetime. Get an alignement done. As for squeaking, check bushings and make sure your struts are fine. I know mine are shot, they squeak from time to time.

If your talkin about the smaller outer boot then theoretically you can change it and the pin without alignment, assuming you dont loosen the outer rod from the inner, the problem with that is if the tie rod isnt farely new the joint will try to spin in the tie rod when you try to reinstall it

So knowing that you will probably have to replace atleast the outer tie rod, and get it aligned i would go ahead and do both sides, so you dont have the same issues in another few months

thanks... another question tho. I just bought a new tie rod end (outer), can't i just loosen the adjustment screw enough to get the old one off and then put the new one on without really changing how the alignment is?

Note how many threads are visible above the adjustment screw and how it's rotated so that you can put the new one in exactly the same spot. I got mine just right, so no adjustment was needed for the alignment.

However, that doesn't make the alignment any cheaper. You still need to go to the garage and pay full price to get it measured, so the effort is really pointless.

Like potato said you can get it really close sometimes perfect if you measure it out but not every tie rod is the same even if it is from Honda so an alignment is a must if you dont want to kill tires and possibly ball joints, or the tie rods

I had both of my out tie rod boots and my upper control arm boots broke and I just changed out the boots. I check the joints and all are still good. It's been about 2 years and no problem yet. No free play in the steering. The thing is, I live in CA and no salt and rarely ever rain here.
I would think if the boots just broke you can just change them and no alignment will be needed.
                A few things to remember:
                1) Use the pitman puller or similar tools, I had problem with the fork.
                2) Torque the castle nuts on correctly and not just turn it b/c you can strip the stud.
                3) You might want to get a circlip plier b/c I had a hard time getting those clips on with just pliers.
                4) Don't forget to use high quality grease and use plenty in the boots and the joints.

                Good luck.
