Help with rev & acceleration problems

OK guys, first of all, YES, I did search but didn't find anyone with my same problem...

Well I have a stock automatic '90 Accord LX F22A1, I had to rebuild the engine but everything was left stock, my problem has been for the past month or so. After a while driving my car suddenly stops letting me accelerate past 2500 rpm, if I try to force it by accelerating more, it starts reving from 1200 to 3000 rpms but still doesn't accelerate. If I keep the revs below 1500 rpms everything it perfect, but of course I wont be going too fast...LOL. When it first started if I turned the car off and then back on it would then work perfectly, but now that doesn't work anymore. I thought it could maybe be something with the tranny but it I put the car in neutral or park and accelerate, it wont rev past 1800 rpms, and most of the time it stalls. I also noticed that when it starts doing this, a strong smell of fuel starts coming in to the car. Please if anyone has an idea of what this could be please help.

Oh, I did eliminate the charcoal canister, but I dont think that has anything to do.

    Thanks in advance to all.

It sounds like it's in limp home mode. Start by troubleshooting the ignition system.

        Update

OK guys, I just got to checking my CEL codes and got code 12 and 15. For what I was able to find those codes are EGR Valve-12 and Ignition Output Signal-15.

        Questions:
Can I just eliminate the EGR and what exactly would be the Ignition Output Signal?

Code 15 is likely the distributor... the igniter, coil, or the distributor itself is bad.

Your best bet would be to repair the EGR system, rather than eliminating it.

Thanks, I'm gonna try to borrow a distributor and see if it works, hopefully that will take my problems away...let you guys know what happens...

How are your spark plugs? Both the condition of them, and the order of the wiring.

If you're smelling fuel, then it's not burning properly. There's a DEFINITE ignition issue going on. If the distributor is guaranteed to be good, and you know your coil is good, then the error may be in the plugs or wires. OR, there's some serious internal damage to the engine...

Have you overheated it recently? Or snapped the timing belt? Check to make sure your timing belt hasn't skipped a tooth or two.

Thanks for the response, the spark plugs are brand new just installed them with the distributor, the order I currently have I understand is correct, I'll double check, the wires are farely new but I'll try some news ones, just in case I was "lucky" enough to get bad wires... about the overheating, no it hasn't overheated, and regarding the timing belt, I'll check to see if it skipped any teeth, hopefully it didn't and it shouldn't have either, but who knows. Again thanks for the response...I'll let you know the outcome of these tests...

OK, I just checked the spark plug wires and continued with the same problem, also checked the order with my other CB7 and its the same order.

The only thing I haven't been able to check is if the timing belt skipped a tooth. I'll check that tomorrow to see, first I have to get it home since it let me stranded.

OK, I checked my timing belt and it was perfectly timed, almost too good to be true, also checked compression in each cylinder, have the following; cylinder 1 and 2 - 170, cylinder 3 - 165, and cylinder 4 - 168, there is spark coming through the wires, I'll be checking fuel filter today, also the fuel injectors, dont know what else to check...any advice would be greatly appreciated...Thankks...

Check your fuel pressure yet? I wonder if you've got a leaking fuel pressure regulator...that would explain the fuel smell in the engine compartment. Or it could be from someplace else like the fuel rail.

Haven't checked the fuel pressure but I'll do it between today and tomorrow, let you know the results.

                          Thanks...

                            Update

OK, now I'm really ticked-off...I changed my fuel filter, and I swapped my fuel rail and fuel regulator from my '93 EX, and the car started right up, with some backfiring but a lot better.

Now my big concern and question is, that it still revs up and down after a while driving even if I stop and put it in neutral, and I also noticed that if the fuel is is at a 1/4 of a tank or less it does it more...and something VERY strange happened today, when I went to get gas I left the car on since my wife and kids were in it, and noticed that as soon as I loosened the fuel cap, the car automatically shut off, I tried to restart it but it wouldn't start, so I put the cap back on once I finished and the car started perfectly...so my main question is, "Are all these things related to the same thing and if so what could be causing it?"

Thanks in advance for all your help.

i have only heard of a dizzy causing this and cel 15 is ignition output signl which is inside the dizzy im PRETTY sure. so check the dizzy wiring to see if one of the wire pins came out of the plug unhooking it or if a wire is cut or damaged. this could possibly cause this. and i would try putting the canister back on. i dont know much about them but i know its hooked into your tank for some kind of safety feature if you roll over so that couldv'e messed with tank/fuel pressure and that would explain why it died when you pulled the cap off. just a guess
